The Power that PreservesFrom Holt Rinehart and Winston

Twice Thomas Covenant has been wrenched out of his bitter life of isolation and scorn to find himself the reluctant instrument of conflict between good and evil in that magical world known as the Land. Again he returns; but now, realizing his responsibility for the Land's survival, and in angry atonement for having been the cause of so much of its anguish and peril, he will no longer be manipulated. He is prepared to make his own stand against Lord Foul the Despiser, to use - if only he can discover how - the power that is his alone, feared beyond all other by Foul and his minions. "An intricately crafted fantasy that presents a most unusual and memorable anti-hero in Thomas Covenant. But it is the spellbinding tapestry of the Land through which he journeys that will linger on in the reader's imagination long after the last page is turned. It will be turned all too quickly." - Terry Brooks, author of The Sword of Shannara.

Want to feel annoyed? Then this is your book!
By Kikaida
My wife used to rave about this book and series. Having just got a Kindle, I figured this would be an interesting read. The issue I have with the book is that I HATE the main character. He's a miserable, sniveling, whiny cry baby. I can't stand how he treats people and why someone hasn't done away with him yet is beyond me, despite his goal. I root for his death and demise in the most painful way. It is tortuous to have to read his banter from the 1st person. The anger management issues that he has and the "poor pitiful me" attitude is just grading on the nerves after 14 chapters. You keep reading, hoping that at some point he'll have a revelation and become a descent person but it just doesn't seem like its going to happen. I look forward to finishing this trial in patience as that is what it has become. 50% done and counting down the pages.

I find that the author has gone out of his way to use overly abstruse, recondite and daedalean words...Rephrased, he went overboard with his thesaurus. I have a deep vocabulary well to draw from but this author has reached the point of just being ridiculous with his word selection. I don't mind a sprinkling of new terms here and there but chapter after chapter full of "see how intellectual I am? do you know this word?" cockiness gets really old.

I read to feel good, I read for wonderment, I read for excitement, I read for knowledge, I read for thrills and I read for beauty...all of which are glaringly absent from this book.

Hopefully I'll finish this but more and more I want to delete it and move on to more promising literature. Will there be an update? Stay tuned......

*Update and conclusion*

I think, for me, the two star rating is fair "I don't like it". After my initial harsh review, I pretty much stick to it. Although shortly after writing it the book finally took a turn of sorts to more interesting ground. I found that after 14-15 painful chapters, it was about 8-9 chapters too late to salvage my indulgence. It seems that so much time was wasted needlessly in the head of Covenant that so much omission was made as to "world building". Yes certain scenes really did come to life and without giving it away, the horses were simply beautiful and their land quite vivid.

One cannot help but to draw stark parallels to Lord of the Rings. Although I try to give literary freedom to the author under the premise of 'common themes'...Sort of like a blues song sounding, for the most part, the same as the rest with slight variations. But it is without a doubt that certain things were quite glaring and Tolkien-esk.

I found the pre-climax battle a bit clunky in its delivery and the culmination of that scene very abrupt. I had to read it twice and thought "and thats it? just like that?". I also found the ending to be quite stark and uninspiring. As far as endings go, there was nothing left dangling, no opening to compel me to the 2nd in the series. This saddens me as I see so many glowing reviews that I want to like it, I want to get into it but just feel quite dissatisfied. As far as my ongoing interest in the rest of the series, I feel the story delivered much too, little, much too late. Perhaps if I'm feeling a bit saddistic I may give number 2 a try, but for now I have so many other books lined up that I think that it most unlikely that I will.

If you liked or loved the book, nothing is meant as an offense to you. Simply my take and your mileage obviously varied.

Not a fan.

Pretty boring...I've been reading fantasy for over 20 years and its rare that I get a book that I can't finish. I can't remember the last one actually. Donaldson is going for Kierkegaard "Fear and Trembling" or a Dostoyevsky "Crime and Punishment" sort of slant where the main character has this massive internal struggle and its all played out through the characters interactions with his environment. The problem is that Donaldson isn't groundbreaking like Kierkegaard and he isn't half the writer that Dostoyevsky was. So what's left is a extremely slow paced fantasy novel with with a massive amount of internal dialogue whenever the protagonist is faced with any situation. Literally any situation, for example Covenant opens the door, insert 10 pages about how Covenant struggles with his sense of self when faced with the prospect of touching a door handle that he may or may not be actually touching and if he does touch it then what are the physical, mental and spiritual ramifications of touching the door handle. Its a bit ridiculous after a while. WE GET IT NOW CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN. As much as I hate to quit... I'm done with this mess.

THE antihero!
By Morgan T Duncan
I read these books as hey were published years ago and was blown away by the story and the characters and the ideas. Often, over the intervening years, I've contemplated revisiting The Land - but the memory of the grinding grimness of the main character has stopped me. I'm glad I finally overcame my fear of Thomas Covenant and his unending pain and scorn, but from the perspective of a man Older than Covenant, as much as I love the story and the ideas, the author seems to be trying a little too hard.
