Dennis Glover is a professional speechwriter for some of Australia's most prominent political and business leaders and an academic historian of oratory. He is a graduate of Monash University and he took a PhD in History at Cambridge University. Scholarly, gem of a book

For anyone who has to go beyond a once every 10 years "unaccustomed as I am to public speaking..." moment, this book will explain a great many mysteries about what makes amazing oratory. Drawing on a couple of thousand years of examples, the patterns and methods are illustrated clearly. There is an element of theatre, but the greatest speeches share a logic and approach to their story-telling that might prove just as applicable to your monthly project update for a steering committee as rousing the troops for battle. Think 'Alain de Botton on speech-making' as a quick summary.

The Most Important Music Book I Ever Read

My main instrument is the guitar. So how can I say this piano book is the most important music book I ever read? It's because the principles expressed here extend far beyond the piano.

I'm not sure what originally drew me to it in the first place. I think there was a reference to it in another book I was reading. When I saw it had been in print since 1981 that also made an impression. My favorite guitar method book was written in the 1960's and it's outstanding. The longevity of a music book often speaks for it's relevance and value. And I wasn't disappointed in this case.

The premise of the book is that it "rebels" against conventional wisdom, or the established classical learning that prevailed around the time it was written. The main message I carried away after reading it was "if it sounds good it IS good." It doesn't matter whether it's theoretically correct. Just let your ears be the judge. Theory geeks aren't going to like this book at all. But I got it. And it has had a huge impact on my playing ever since.

I read through a long list of theory books before and after reading this book. By the way, this is not a theory book per se. At one point I said "enough is enough" and hung all the theory and just started playing. Something I came to realize about theory is that it's a way of interpreting and "codifying" if you will, what other skilled composers have written and played in the past. It helps to have some kind of starting point, or frame of reference, if you want to write and play yourself. So theory provides a structured way of learning and understanding how music is composed.

But theory will only take you so far. I think way too many people miss this important point. It's theory for the sake of creating and playing music, not theory for the sake of being theoretically correct and perfect. Eventually you have to start trusting your ears and your feelings and see where that takes you with your music. This book helped me do just that. And that is why I say it's the most important music book I ever read.

How to for Popoular Music

The book is for people who already know how to play classical music but never learned how to develop a simple melody line into a more interesting score. This is the province of the fake book. Accordingly, the book could have been titled How to Play from a Fake Book for classical Pianists.

The book is wordy compared to many. But, that can be an advantage. Marx explains each concept and new step in detail so there can be no doubt of your understanding of his point before he moves onward.

I found the attempt at humor to be distracting as well as making the book longer than it had to be. This being a review of the third edition of the November 1976 issue. Also this edition has no index.

What makes the book so useful is that of all the topics that could have been introduced, only those that are relevant to the author's purpose are used and they are used immediately following a bit of theory.

At least one review faults the book since the concept of relative minor chords is not covered in detail. To that I would say that for a book of this nature one does not expect exhaustive explanations of music theory.

It is interesting that modern day popular music traces its routes all the way back to J.S. Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and others as is shown by way of example throughout.

The development uses the concept of stratification of the keyboard first in a simple way and then gradually developing more complexity until finally arriving at the use of the circle of fifths for the last examples.

If you have had problems grasping the concept of syncopation, then on this topic alone the book is worth the price of admission. I say this because that remark applied in spades to me. Marx furthers is explanation of syncopation with examples from Bolero Rhumba and others.

All and all this is a great book for self study. In spite of the somewhat strange humor, I gave the book 5 stars for good clear development; short easily mastered chapters; and good example adaptions as the book proceeds.

A music theory book by any other name...

This book has been around a long time. "More than 30 years in print!" trumpets the cover of the latest edition. I had never looked inside it, though, until it was called to my attention by a gentleman at an after-concert reception, who said he was teaching himself to play from it and who recommended it highly to me.

What I discovered after reading it is that "How to Play the Piano Despite Years of Lessons" is a good but quite specialized instruction book: it is for a person who knows something about music, and who just wants to play stuff: songs everyone knows, standards, Christmas carols, etc. The authors, Ward Cannel and Fred Marx, spend a lot of time trying to demystify the process of doing this and convincing the reader that it's possible. I give them credit for never saying that it's easy or doesn't require effort: despite the new names (musical "strata," using the letter "i" to mean a half-step) sprinkled throughout the text, and "myths" versus "facts" that open each chapter, most of the concepts are ones that will be familiar to anyone who has studied music theory or taken jazz piano instruction, and there is nothing wrong with that: the material is solid, and anyone who sticks with the program and can get around the keyboard with reasonable ease will end up being able to do what the authors claim: play music.

"Reasonable ease," there's the rub: Cannel and Marx spend a lot of time slamming traditional piano instruction, with its ostensibly boring scales and exercises. Admittedly, years of instruction that centers on painfully learning difficult classical pieces without any understanding of how they are constructed has produced a lot of adults who can't play anything now. But there IS a point to scales and exercises: they build physical fluency at the keyboard, the ability to get to the notes you want to play. The major weakness of this book is that it doesn't acknowledge this essential need. My guess is that a lot of folks over the years have understood the concepts presented in this book, but have nevertheless given up in frustration after they've hit that technical wall.

Bottom line: this is not the musical equivalent of a quick weight-loss diet book: some musical knowledge and willingness to put in the time and effort are necessary. I'm biased, but I also think having a supportive piano instructor would help as well.

Execellent resource for sustainable design

This is an excellent book on Daylighting especially in the way the author discusses so many related and synergystic issues. It is an extremely informative, elegant, scholarly and comprehensive book on the subject. Beautifully illustrated with superbly photographed plates. As a daylighting practitioner and architect in the field, I find it to be both useful and interesting. My congratulations to May Guzowski who, incidentally, teaches architecture at the University of Minnesota.

Louise Fili is director of Fili Design, a New York-based design studio specializing in typographic treatments. The recipient of the AIGA Medal in 2014, she is the coauthor with Steven Heller of Scripts.

An absolutely delicious book!

As a calligrapher & lettering designer, I'm a glutton for letterforms. I own quite a few books on the subject, but this one really stands out. It offers an enormous variety of script styles & formats--from typefaces to handwriting to neon signs & more-- organized by country & covering a wide time-frame. The design of each page is a beautifully crafted visual treat. I find myself browsing often for sheer pleasure, & it has already been an extremely valuable source of inspiration for my work. Anyone with an interest in lettering, type or design will find something to love about this book.

Beautiful and inspiring!

Thank you Steven and Louise for sharing from your personal collection that I'm sure has taken a great deal of time to collect. The examples are grouped by country of origin (France, Britain, Germany, Italy and America) and each chapter provides a large assortment of examples. Anyone interested in typography and looking for inspiration for their own hand lettering projects with love this book, I do!

Pictures of ideas

I guess the reason I find ephemera so fascinating is that it freezes ideas in time. Advertisements, specimen sheets, instruction guides, product labels, and other forms of printed matter that were never meant to outlive their immediate purpose, provide a snapshot of the producer's intent and reveal a designer's approach to solving a problem.

If you know the work of Fili and Heller, you might expect they'd have amassed a rather substantial collection of ephemera over the years. Heller, a former art director for the New York Times and well-known lecturer on the history of graphic design, has authored over 100 books on design and popular culture. Louise Fili, formerly a designer for Herb Lubalin and art director for Pantheon Books, has authored another twenty titles, many of them in collaboration with Heller (they are husband and wife).

Fili is among my favorite designers. If you have no idea why you'd want a book of this type, take a look at her portfolio of work. Though she offers a fresh and modern approach, you can't help but see the influences of 19th and early 20th century graphic design and typography.

Discovering, digesting, and deconstructing the work of others -- finding the essence of how disparate elements are arranged in order -- is part of the design mind's blessing/curse. Whether it's a conscious effort or gut-level assimilation, you can't help but absorb the layouts, typefaces, colors, and imagery that pass through your vision each day and mentally store them away. The beauty of this book is that it captures some of the best of what these two experienced designers have found and distills it in a form we can easily access.

The book is virtually all images -- there are brief introductions to each section and footnotes, but just enough to supply the necessary orientation. The wonderful cover design was created by Louise Fili and John Passafiume. (I'm told that another favorite of mine, Jessica Hische, worked on the early stages of the interior design.)

I have hundreds of design books on the shelves around me. And, though I love digital, I love print too. I get some indescribable sense of satisfaction knowing that the thoughts of so many good designers and tens of thousands of their designs are by my side.

Great series...however

There are so many things that were left completely unresolved. I really hope there is an offshoot series, but at the same time so much of Cara's story wasn't finished that I hate to say goodbye to her. I mean really

Does she die a 3rd time and become the Morrigan?
Does Setanta keep trying to kill Lily?
Did Fiadh actually kill the babies?

Can Drake find happiness?
Do Brendan and Cara have a happily ever after or just a lifetime of stolen moments?
Now that Brighid is back, what happens next?
What happened to Pol and Alssya?
Does the old lady from across the water bring a new religion?

There are so many more...sigh. Again, the series is amazing, well written, fully fleshed out, drama packed and I loved it. I'm just a tad disappointed at the lackluster ending after all of the wild twists and turns we took to get there. I'd definitely be excited to read more, especially if we got some answers.

Such an emotional ending to an amazing series! I have so enjoyed reading each book in the Chaos series, and it saddens me to see the series end. Author Claire Farrell has yet to disappoint as each of her characters and the world they share pull you in from the start and keep you hooked to the very end. I do not want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that this series ending book was all I hoped it would be, and I am glad to have come across such an amazing author!

I have read this series in baited breath and I'm sad to see it end. I loved reading the characters progress and how they each achieved their own goals through heart ache and triumph. The sacrifices they made for their own goals and how it shaped the world around them. I do wish it would continue but I feel as though its right. I would suggest this series to anyone and I hope you find solace in the pages of these books.

Very practical

It is easy to find good books about C# and Java. However, for many more specialized development tools it is hard to find a book that provides what a beginner needs. In many cases, a book thoroughly covers the language commands, but leaves the reader staring a a blank command line wondering "What, exactly, do I need to type to compile and run my program?" Bruce Smith's books do not fall into this trap. Smith provides not only the necessary coaching and instruction in assembly language for the Raspberry Pi's ARM processor, but also gives clear practical instructions for getting everything to work.

One of the reasons I bought the book is its introduction to the ARM vector floating-point coprocessor, a topic that often gets short-shrift from authors. If I had to pick one nit with Smith's book, he fails to mention a little trap with assembling coprocessor code. Smith starts the book using the GNU assembler "as" and then moves to using gcc later in the book, which is entirely reasonable. However, some readers might like to know that if you want to assemble vector coprocessor code with "as" rather than gcc you must include the command-line parameter "-mfpu=vfpv2".

Whether you are looking just to have some fun learning assembly language with your Raspberry PI or whether you view the PI as a stepping-stone to greater things ARM, Bruce Smith's book definitely belongs on your shelf.

I'm totally new to Raspberry Pi, Linix, and to Arm processors. This book is clearly written with easy to follow examples. I'm up to chapter 12 so far.

I bought the kindle edition and am reading it on my IPad. The formatting, pictures, and text flow are all superb.
