Building a Scalable Data Warehouse with Data Vault 2.0, by Dan Linstedt, Michael Olschimke

The Data Vault was invented by Dan Linstedt at the U.S. Department of Defense, and the standard has been successfully applied to data warehousing projects at organizations of different sizes, from small to large-size corporations. Due to its simplified design, which is adapted from nature, the Data Vault 2.0 standard helps prevent typical data warehousing failures.

"Building a Scalable Data Warehouse" covers everything one needs to know to create a scalable data warehouse end to end, including a presentation of the Data Vault modeling technique, which provides the foundations to create a technical data warehouse layer. The book discusses how to build the data warehouse incrementally using the agile Data Vault 2.0 methodology. In addition, readers will learn how to create the input layer (the stage layer) and the presentation layer (data mart) of the Data Vault 2.0 architecture including implementation best practices. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples and an easy to understand framework, Dan Linstedt and Michael Olschimke discuss:

  • How to load each layer using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), including automation of the Data Vault loading processes.
  • Important data warehouse technologies and practices.
  • Data Quality Services (DQS) and Master Data Services (MDS) in the context of the Data Vault architecture.
  • Provides a complete introduction to data warehousing, applications, and the business context so readers can get-up and running fast
  • Explains theoretical concepts and provides hands-on instruction on how to build and implement a data warehouse
  • Demystifies data vault modeling with beginning, intermediate, and advanced techniques
  • Discusses the advantages of the data vault approach over other techniques, also including the latest updates to Data Vault 2.0 and multiple improvements to Data Vault 1.0

Comprehensive Data Vault 2.0 reference manual
By M. Ferle
This book fills a huge void in Data Vault 2.0 resources. It covers everything about data vault, including data modeling, ETL processing, error handling, metadata, data quality and more, all explained in depth with sufficient examples that can be immediately put to use. Every question that I could think of relating to data vault is covered in the book. It is an excellent reference manual to have on hand while doing data vault implementations.

That said, I gave the book only four stars because there is always room for improvement. I was disappointed after reading Chapter 3, about the Data Vault 2.0 methodology. It appears that the authors threw in a bunch of various methodologies, frameworks, best practices and approaches without clearly explaining how all these parts fit together into a cohesive methodology.

The authors appear out of their depth in the project management space. They incorrectly apply the term PMP (Project Management Professional, a certification from the Project Management Institute) as a best practice. What they probably meant is that the project management aspect of the Data Vault 2.0 methodology is taken from the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), a project management standard issued by the Project Management Institute.

I also don’t see why the authors included Scrum in the mix. The explanation of how Scrum is applied in mini-waterfall sprints is confusing and contradicting. For example, it is not clear how the Scrum roles such as scrum master and product owner translate into the mini-waterfall sprints. They state that Scrum is used for team coordination/team organization and that the team is self-organized while at the same time they designate the project manager as the person who plans the tasks within a mini-waterfall sprint. It is contradicting that on one hand the product owner participates in the sprints on a daily basis while on the other hand there is no user involvement during the development part of a sprint. In my opinion it would have been better to forget Scrum and just use the Agile Manifesto and its principles in order to bring agile thinking into the Data Vault 2.0 methodology.

Not your daddy's data warehouse!
By Kent Graziano
Full disclosure: I am a huge Data Vault fan and did help with the earlier books (but not this one). This is the Data Vault book everyone has been clamoring for for years. We finally have a book that not only teaches you how to model a Data Vault but also shows you how to load data into a DV as well as how to build Information Marts on top of it to pull the data out for reporting. This book covers the full life cycle of developing an enterprise data warehouse in an agile manner using the Data Vault method. And to top it off, this book has all the details for the enhancements that came with Data Vault 2.0. This book is to Data Vault what Dr. Kimball's Data Warehouse Lifecycle book was to dimensional modeling. If oyu can only buy on data warehouse book this year - get this one.

The most detailed and complete data vault book ever written!
By Number2
Finally, a Data Vault book that has everything you need from end-to-end to build a data vault warehouse from the ground up!

I've read the Supercharge Your Data Warehouse book from Dan, I've read all of Hans Hultgren's books, I've read and watched DV fundamentals training material, and I never really felt like I fully understood everything end to end. I grasped the big picture and was excited about the possibilities, but working alone after all of that I felt like I still didn't really have the tools I needed to complete a data vault on my own. With this book, I finally do!

This book takes you from concepts to implementation, from beginning to end. There are actual screen shots of how to create databases, what indexes to put on your vault tables, how to create an SSIS package, TSQL code, Master Data Services and Data Quality Services examples, there's MDX code, all of it. And it's not just details to get you to a data vault and then leaving you on your own to figure out the info marts, this takes you all the way to putting data in your dimension and fact tables.

All in all, this is the most complete Data Vault book that's ever been created and it's a fantastic value for the money. It's like 684 pages. Once I started, it was literally 8 hours a day for 4-5 days of plowing through all the information and going back and re-reading and getting more details out of it before I was done. It's not a book you can just flip through in a couple of hours. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in data vault or data warehousing in general.

Now in Paperback! What does history look like? How do you draw time? Cartographies of Time is the first history of the timeline, written engagingly and with incredible visuals. The authors, both accomplished writers and historians, sketch the shifting field of graphic representations of history from the beginning of the print age through the present. They shed light on western views of history and on the complex relationship between general ideas about the course of events and the technical efforts to record and connect dates and names in the past. In addition to telling a rich, forgotten story, this book serves as a kind of grammar of historical representation, uncovering the ways in which time has been structured in thought and in images, in the Western tradition. Written for both the academically curious and the general reader, Cartographies of Time provides a set of tools for understanding the evolution and the significance of graphic representations of time both in history and in contemporary culture.

Review
"Not all maps get us from A to Z; many chart decades of progress and centuries of change. This is a lavish guide to what makes us human, a sprawling, predominantly hand-drawn collection of infographics showing lyrical and linear ways to mark everything from the development of biblical thought to the spread of empires and the mapping of human sensation. Joseph Priestley's timelines of history and biography anchor themselves firmly in the middle." -- The Guardian (UK)

About the Author
Daniel Rosenberg is a film-studio executive and producer. In July 2001 Daniel and his wife, Leora, were married in her hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa. They have a daughter and live in Manhattan.

Warning: most illustrations are not in focus
By N. Hyland
It is with much regret that I must report that an otherwise excellent book has a major production flaw.
As far as I can tell, it appears that the author's provided scanned images of many ancient documents to the designer at Princeton Architectural Press. The layout and type is all excellent. But, it looks like the majority of images were not properly sharpened in Photoshop (a standard procedure when using scanned images) before being imported into InDesign (or possibly QuarkXPress) for the production of the book. There are a few images that are sharp. They appear to be taken with a digital camera or are more modern timelines converted directly from EPS vector files for the layout. In one example you can see the original scan, fuzzy, and next to it a sharpened close up of a part of the very same image.
If it is not a problem with the designer doing sharpening of images, than it is some kind of problem with the printer overseas either using the wrong image data or un-sharpening the images in some way.
It does not appear to be a screen alignment issue or something physically done wrong in printing. (Although, on a few signatures, the text is foggy but I think that is the ink thinning out - a consequence, perhaps, of Princeton Architectural Press saving money by going to overseas for printing.)
Why do sharp illustrations matter in this book? Because it is all about very detailed graphs. It is nearly useless because one cannot make out any of the details in the images printed in the book.
Really a shame that this disaster happened. The designer and the editor should have caught this in the proofs and corrected it before publication. If it was entirely the printer's fault (it is could be) then Princeton Architectural Press has a good cause to go back to the printer and find out what happened and hopefully, the printer will redo it if it was the output or printer's mistake.
The book would only be worth buying if very deeply discounted. If recalled and reprinted properly, I would give it 5 stars. It is otherwise a fascinating book.

A History of Histories Flowing on the Page
By Rob Hardy
"While historical texts have long been subject to critical analysis, the formal and historical problems posed by graphic representations of time have largely been ignored." So starts an impressive illustrated book _Cartographies of Time: A History of the Timeline_ (Princeton Architectural Press) by Daniel Rosenberg and Anthony Grafton. The reason the timeline is ignored is that it seems so obvious - plot historic trends on a line, the earlier ones on one end leading to later ones on the other. It is such a simple idea that it is a surprise that we didn't know about it as soon as we started putting marks on paper. Yet there is a history of the development of such lines, and it is fascinating how the lines caught on once people started charting history on paper. That such graphic histories are useful seems obvious; they have the potential for giving visual form to historical flow, and for showing connections of one trend to another. There are plenty of serious charts of time shown here that conscientiously do just that. There are other charts, just as serious, that have been designed to show, for instance, how Jesus is going to return in 1843, and there are idiosyncratic charts by Dadaists which show not much of anything but in a highly complex fashion. The book is most entertaining when it looks at these oddities, but there is nothing like it to show our progress at taking graphic time seriously.

The antecedent of the timeline was probably the lists and tables giving a chronology of rulers and important events. Family trees lent themselves to chronological display, although many of the ones here are so complicated that it is hard to see the years ticking by. By far the most important name here is Joseph Priestley, whose experiments in chemistry helped in understanding what oxygen did and whose religious beliefs forced him to flee to America to avoid persecution. He was the inventor of the time map as we know it. One of his charts produced here is _A Chart of Biography_ (1765) showing a horizontal line for each scientist on the chart (the chart shown concerns those involved in investigating vision, light, and color, but there was a more extensive chart that showed artists, statesmen, historians, and more). Each line starts on the birth year and ends on the death year of each scientist. Elegant and effective, it was a watershed: "Though it followed centuries of experimentation, it was the first chart to present a complete and fully theorized visual vocabulary for a time map, and the first to successfully compete with the matrix as a normative structure for representing regular chronology." Many of the charts here are direct descendants of Priestley's, and many of them are designed to push a particular religious view. The millennial views of an imminent apocalypse in the nineteenth century combined with cheap printing rates produced many strange charts, some starting with the seven days of creation and ending, as they say, "in the not so distant future." Among the charts shown here is a representation of history up to 1843; that was the date when the followers of the New England minister William Miller predicted the Apocalypse, and history was to end then, so the chart did, too. His followers were disappointed that the end did not come in 1843, and when it did not come even in 1844 it was clear that there was some error, and, the authors say tactfully, "both Miller's predictions and his chronology charts had to be radically revised." There were other charts afterwards to show a later year for the end; at least some learned the lesson that no such end is predictable, and those who thought it still predictable were not so bold as to put a date on it.

This book is filled with gorgeous color pictures of the charts. It must be said that some of the pictures are just too small, but this seems unavoidable when some of these charts were huge, more than fifty feet long. Many are crammed with words, too, and so we should probably thank the authors for reading them for us and then reproducing them in a way that offers no temptation for us to scan them from beginning to end. The ones that can be read are fascinating, like the Marconi Telegraph chart that shows the time and position of transatlantic steamers for April 1912, by which it could be seen which ones ought to have been near enough the _Titanic_ to help her out. Buckminster Fuller produced a chart in 1943 to show how the world was about to have a technological revolution that would end war and poverty. Closer to accurate is the simple graph by Gordon Moore, the famous "Moore's Law" which shows the inexorable increase of speed of computing as time goes by, and has proved to be surprisingly accurate. Mark Twain had a chart that was part of his history game, and there were other games that were graphic ways to help remember important historic dates and events. There are not only timelines but time circles, and in one case a time dragon from 1672. There are brilliant time maps and silly ones, ones based on facts and some based only on artistic interpretation. Collected in this handsome volume, they make a rich show of graphics and of our attempts to make sense of history.

Brilliant topic utterly ruined by too-small images
By Dr Garry
I have to agree with the reviewer J. Coates. This book should be a five star just for the originality of the subject matter, and the author's excellent coverage. But the publisher has defeated the author's intention, which is to display the rich history of timelines.

I will give you just one example from many. On page 143, the book shows two images from Auguste Comte's Positivist calendar from 1849. Each of these images is about 80mm by 40mm: about one-tenth the size of the original, as far as I can tell. Unless you are using the Large Hadron Collider to get a better view, the images provide only the vaguest of approximations.

There is no point in buying this book if you are over the age of 40: your eyes simply will not be able to cope without a magnifying glass and a Maglite for illumination. The font size of the body text is somewhere between eensy-weensy and really eensy-weensy, and the font size used for captions makes a 6-point font look like banner headlines.

I don't know if the publisher shafted the author, or if the author colluded in this massacre of his own vision. One day a better publisher will reprint the work in a much larger format, and then we shall have a truly great work to read.

In My Brother's Shadow: A Life and Death in the SS, by Uwe Timm, Anthea Bell

A renowned German novelist's memoir of his brother, who joined the SS and was killed at the Russian front.

Uwe Timm was only two years old when in 1942 his older brother, Karl Heinz, announced to his family he had volunteered for service with an elite squadron of the German army, the SS Totenkopf Division, also known as Death's Heads. Little more than a year later Karl Heinz was injured in battle at the Russian front, his legs amputated, and a few weeks after that he died in a military hospital. To their father, Karl Heinz's death only served to immortalize him as the courageous one, the obedient one, the one who upheld the family honor. His childhood was marked by the mythology of his brother's lost life; his absence-the hole he left in the family-just as palpable as if he were still alive. His mother's sadness and his father's rage over the loss of Karl Heinz ultimately defined Uwe's relationship with his parents. But while they eulogized the boy, Uwe wondered: who really had his brother been?

The life and death of his older brother has haunted Uwe Timm for more than sixty years. His parents' silence was one of the most painful aspects of his family history. Not even after the war ended, and details of unspeakable horrors emerged, did his parents ever acknowledge Germany's guilt and Karl Heinz's role in it. They simply said: We didn't know. After the deaths of his parents and older sister Timm set out in search of answers. Using military reports, letters, family photos and cryptic entries from a diary his brother kept during the war, he began to piece together the picture, discovering his brother's story is not just that of one man, but the tragedy of an entire generation. In the Shadow of My Brother is a meditation on German history and guilt, one that is both nuanced and measured.

From Publishers Weekly
A memoir not of a brother but of his absence from the author's life and family, Timm's book revolves around memory--of how traces of his brother, an SS corporal killed in Russia in 1943, are tied up with aspects of WWII that still remain unspeakable for many Germans. Timm was two when his brother Karl-Heinz enlisted, at age 18. Using diary entries from a book Karl-Heinz kept at the front, family recollections and his own experience growing up without his brother, Timm works through, beautifully, his sense of an unknowable figure who, 60 years later, continues to loom large in his consciousness. At the same time, a good deal of the book goes toward unpacking the ways in which national identity informs personal identity; Timm digs into what it meant then (and means now) to have had a brother, or son, in the SS. Timm's novel The Invention of Curried Sausage was set during WWII, and this book is informed by a deep understanding of its horrors, anxieties and legacies. The translation is lyrical if occasionally awkward ("In the coffee break I went to the lavatory"); the whole compellingly scales a nation's failure down to the level of a nuclear family.

From Booklist
Timm's reputation as a gifted literary portrait artist is by now well established outside of his native Germany, and his narratives of moral (and occasionally existential) ambiguity have likewise frequently transcended geographical and historical circumstance. His latest book, ostensibly a memoir of his older brother, an SS soldier killed on the Russian front, dares to be as anthropologically illuminating as it is intimate. Praised by their father for his bravery, Karl Heinz was the boy who told no lies, was always upright, shed no tears. His war diary, a quiet testament to the banality of evil that speaks matter-of-factly of combat but only alludes to "the cruel things that sometimes happen," only intensifies Timm's curiosity. A stubborn father and survivor mother, shadows in their own ways, are portrayed tenderly but without much sentiment; their presence rounds out this book's philosophical exploration of courage in its various manifestations. But, always aware of "the danger of smoothing it all out in the telling," Timm leaves powerfully open the question of whether it is more courageous to write or to be silent. Brendan Driscoll

Review
"With piercing intelligence, . . . history and private life [are] interfused utterly by a master writer in a way at once authentic, unpretentious, moving, and of extraordinary significance." --Kirkus Reviews

"This masterful book is autobiographical. It delves into the lives of the author's family, father, mother and sister, during the Nazi years and the Second World War. But essentially it is about his older brother who joined the SS, the Storm Troopers with the skull and bones on their black uniforms. It does not take long, however, before the young man is sent to war and killed on the eastern front.

Up to this point the story is among thousands. What makes it unique and a bestseller in its original German version is the narrator's painstaking reconstruction of this life on the basis of a few letters, a few diary entries, a few photographs and his own desperate memories. On such scanty evidence he probes into the family dynamics, the movitves for his brother's involvements with the most aggressive of Nazi organizations and the signs of his early disenchantment. Deeply affecting are the narrator's speculations about his own vulnerabilities and his hypothetical attitudes towards the regime, had he been old enough to be confronted with any decisions, questions all Germans, nay, all persons living in a country with an army should ask themselves." --Egon Schwarz, Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, Washington University

Forbidden door, not opened
By H. Schneider
Uwe Timm was born in Hamburg in 1940. When he was 3, his 19 y old brother died fighting in the Ukraine. The brother had been a soldier in a tank unit of the Waffen SS, in the infamous Totenkopf Division. Naturally, Timm has hardly any own recollections of his brother. What he has are his parents' tales about the brother, then the brother's letters and a small diary, covering half a year of the Russian campaign in 1943. The diary is partly included in the text. It gives only minimal information.

The subject is a difficult one for Timm. He dares to approach it openly only after his parents and elder sister have died. The book was first published in 2003. Timm compares his shying away from the subject to Blaubart's wife's hesitations in opening the forbidden door. He has the brother's diary and he has the official records of the division's campaign. He wants to compare. Does he dare? After the thrilling Blaubart picture in the early pages, I expected a serious exposure to the horror and analysis of its conditions. It never comes.

This non-fiction book, which is oddly called a novel in the Wikipedia entry on Timm, is more about the author himself and about his parents as it is about the brother. Father was a militarist, clearly. He had been in WW1 and then a `Freikorps' fighter in the Baltic states after WW1. He joined the Wehrmacht again for WW2. The family was deep into Nazi culture. The brother was father's apple of the eye. That is not the least important facet in Timm's memoirs. Mother was a loyal trooper, never second guessing father. Much of the book deals with the family business and its rise and failure after the war. Father's decay and death, mother's never-ending nostalgia for her son. Reconstruction and rearmament in West Germany. Collective guilt debates. The different approach in the East, where all explanations were pushed to the class struggle corner.

Why did the 18 y old brother join the SS, as a volunteer? Mother's explanation was: out of `idealism'. That is an essential category in understanding the attitude of many Nazis and sympathizers. It is a success story of brainwashing propaganda. Not all Nazis were primitives or cynics or fearful underlings who either knew or didn't care that their actions were criminal and immoral. Some, maybe many, had been duped into shedding normal human standards of morality. That is scary. It makes dictatorships more successful than could ever be achieved by pure violent state terror.

Who is Uwe Timm? A respected and successful German writer, with a tendency to the left. More a solid craftsman, not a lost genius (like Koeppen), nor an intellectual maverick (like Enzensberger), nor a great talent (like Erpenbeck). Also not a pompous old star of the literary circus, like Grass, nor an overrated taboo-buster like Schlink.

What has the solid craftsman given us? Timm had precious little material about his brother. Alas, he does not succeed in drawing much out of the little he had. His memories of family life are interesting, but not that unusual, and not particularly well told. The book title is an overstatement, it promises more than it can deliver. The original title is something like ` the example of my brother'. I find that as misleading as Anthea Bell's title version with the shadow. Which example, which shadow? The subtitle in the English version is dishonestly misleading: there is very little about 'a life and death in the SS' here.
The book is disappointing because Timm has promised more than he could deliver. There is a lack of focus on the book's promised subject. It is not a stupid book, but an incomplete one.

great book
By S. Vorstoffel
I was born and raised in Germany. Even though my parents were born after the war and both my grandfathers were dead by the time I started asking questions I can still relate very well to the unease when it comes to talking about WWII.

Where I grew up we had a neighbour whom I only knew as a mild mannered older guy, who loved us kids, would give us sweets and let us play in the big old trees in his garden. At one point I discovered that he was a member of the SS in WWII and had fought somewhere in Russia. He had no family. When he was in his eighties, he started opening up to a few people in the neighbourhood, among them my family. He would talk about the war, his comrades and generally the hard life they lived. He would always start crying. He would never mention fighting, killing civilians and all the other things he most likely saw and did. We all knew about those things, but we also felt sorry for the old guy and nobody pressed questions. He was a neighbour, not close family after all.

Timm's book perfectly captures the conflict of the - very normal - desire to love and admire a brother (father, uncle, grandfather, neighbour) while at the same time knowing that that person must have consciously participated in something unspeakably atrocious.

Obviously there is no easy solution and that conflict is one that generations of Germans had to deal with after the war. It is impossible to excuse what happened, but it is equally impossible to condemn all these people around you who all might have participated to various degrees, and be it just by keeping silent.
