Bill Jelen , Excel MVP and the host of MrExcel.com, has been using spreadsheets since 1985, and he launched the MrExcel.com website in 1998. Bill was a regular guest on Call for Help with Leo Laporte and has produced more than 1,500 episodes of his daily video podcast, Learn Excel from MrExcel. He is the author of 39 books about Microsoft Excel and writes the monthly Excel column for Strategic Finance magazine. His Excel tips appear regularly in CFO Excel Pro Newsletter and CFO Magazine . Before founding MrExcel.com, Bill Jelen spent 12 years in the trenches-working as a financial analyst for finance, marketing, accounting, and operations departments of a $500 million public company. Tracy Syrstad is a developer for the MrExcel consulting team. She was introduced to Excel VBA by a co-worker who encouraged her to learn VBA by recording steps, and then modifying the code as needed. A little disappointed...

I bought this book to improve my VBA for Excel skills for a specific work-related project. Bill Jelen knows the most efficient means to write VBA for Excel...no argument there...and there's a lot of sample code, plus video as well...but I never hit that point where I got excited with my progress like I do with many of the other tech books. To be fair I think VBA for Excel is challenging for any author to teach and truly reach people. I was a bit disappointed with this read...so I ended up leaning on a book by John Walkenbach...Excel 2013 Power Programming with VBA. I found this book to be more helpful for me in understanding VBA syntax.

You won't find a more advanced book out there. There are books as good as this one, but this is for expert level users only while the others will be useful for intermediate or beginners.

There is a lot of good stuff on the web but this brings together a lot valuable examples that you do not need to hunt for

A fine book on advanced Excel topics

I wish I'd found this book sooner. It is very clearly and authoritatively written about various advanced topics. There is a thorough discussion of the "Advanced Filter" feature and also of user forms. Examples were carefully selected to illustrate various features without using an excessive amount of data to clutter things. However, just from the title, it should be expected that this book is not intended for those with little or no prior knowledge of spreadsheets and Excel. This book has been more useful to me than one with "Bible" in its title.

Pure Perfection for Pin-up Lovers!

If you're a fan of Bettie Page, Dita von Teese, or Mad Men, you'll love this book. It's basically page after page of magazine covers and (cheesy, kitschy, utterly adorable) photo-spreads from your parent's generation.

For true fans of pin-up culture, you'll probably spot a few photos that you've seen floating about elsewhere on the internet, but most of the artwork was entirely new to me...and I write a blog on lingerie ([...])!

The only sad thing is that this book is no longer published, and you'll have to pay an arm and leg for a volume that cost less than $10 a few months ago. Definitely worth picking up if you find an affordable version though!

I just love the old pinup girls.
THe girls look so sexy in the dresses and stockings. And then, that little bit of wind the dress goes up and you see that bit of stocking and garter and if you are lucky her panties.
now you have same in black and white plus same colour one. I think the book could have been a little bigger than it is so that you can lay the book flat on a table so you can read it. But overall the book is grate for my collection.

Many of the stories and poems concern things one associates with Minnesota: fishing on Lake Superior, learning to hunt after living for some years in places such as Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., the winter cold, baking fruitcake, deep green forest, working on farms, etc. As is true of almost all collections of such works, some of the contributions are not so great but those that are good (and there are many) are often very great indeed. I particularly liked the story done by Sangita Kalarickal, one of the collection's few contributors who wrote from a non-Minnesota perspective. Her story concerns a woman in India who has learned of her husband's infidelity, wishes to deal with it with help from a questioning mystic, and learns that sometimes you get much more than you may want or deserve. This collection is a worthy addition for any library, in Minnesota or not, and would make a superb holiday gift.

Needs Updating in Acctg Processes

For a book on Information Systems, I would have expected the examples on accounting functions to be more up-to-date with current business practices rather than the archaic processes that were included.
Unfortunately, my instructor taught "by the book" and I was forced to relearn all the old ways of doing things such as forgoing using a lockbox for receiving cash and having two people in the mail room open the checks and manually write a deposit slip. Who has time for that?
Have the authors of this book not heard of process improvement, automation, Six Sigma? Trust me, the companies out there certainly have and that's what employees' success is judged against.
Teaching college students who have never worked in an Accounting Dept a process that hasn't been used in years is doing them a disservice. The Universities should expect current version textbooks to actually be updated with current business practices and then teach current business practices. Challenge themselves to actually produce graduates who won't feel behind the curve when they're out looking for a job up against those who have work experience. Put them ahead of the curve by teaching them Best Practice for their field. What a concept. It starts with truly up-to-date textbooks.

This is really a great textbook. It is almost entertaining to read because they use the same examples for several chapters at a time. Really outlines AIS. The self quizzes at the end of the chapters are really helpful and the problems are useful and not tedious.

Disappointing--grammatical errors and dated graphics

When I purchase a book in this price range, I have a level of expectations that I think is pretty reasonable (considering I've spent about $3000-4000 on books for college). First off, the book is littered with typos and grammatical errors. Attention to detail please! And then the graphics circa 1985 are embarrassing. I get it, sometimes graphics are just easier left as is, but for a few extra bucks, updated colorful graphics would have been a nice touch.

I am a non-techie, and I have found the book rather laborious at times to read. I have had other subjects in my college career which I didn't think I would enjoy much *until* I read the assigned textbook. This book makes me want to know even less about information systems. It is boring and sometimes rather repetitive in the wrong ways. I find my mind wandering, so the writing is not very engaging for non-techie students like me.

The examples, however, are usually helpful, so there is that positive. I wish I could like this book more--computers are a major part of any type of work, but this is just one of those classes in which I'm simply going through the motions to get it over with. If it had been more engaging, maybe I would have ended up liking the course I am in and learning something. Meh. There's always hope for the next edition.

PREFACE
Computer numerical control programming skills are important to any engineering student. The CNC Workbook: An Introduction to Computer Numerical Control is an affordable text and software combination designed to introduce students to CNC and provide them with an opportunity to learn and practice at their own pace. The workbook teaches students about CNC programming, and the software, TORCAM CNCez, allows students to create CNC programs and test them in a simulated manufacturing environment. The CNC Workbook may be used as a complete text for a course in computer numerical control, or as an instructional supplement if CNC is a component of another course. Students can even use this package to learn about CNC on their own, outside of the classroom environment. The software will run on high and low end computers, and is ideal for learning, teaching, and testing CNC programming.

FEATURES OF THE WORKBOOK
The text introduces students to CNC programming and the use of the TORCAM CNCez simulation software, providing the student with the basics needed to build confidence in CNC programming.

Chapters 1 through 3 discuss the basic concepts of computer numerical control, including the theoretical and applied aspects.

Chapter 4 introduces the student to the interface of the TORCAM CNCez simulation software program.

Chapters 5 and 6 begin teaching the student to program and run simulations. Chapter 5 describes milling, and Chapter 6 covers turning, the two most important and most common uses for CNC programming. Each chapter concludes with five step-by-step tutorials to help the student develop programming skills.

Chapter 7 describes the basics of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing.

Chapter 8 provides extra exercises for the student, including questions to answer and new simulations to program.

FEATURES OF THE SOFTWARE
One of the biggest problems in learning CNC technology and specifically CNC programming is finding time for the hands-on training required on a CNC machine tool. The CNC Workbook lessens the student's dependence on traditional classroom-style learning and maximizes the amount of hands-on CNC programming time available to each student or trainee. Using the software allows the student to perform dry rounds of all CNC programs in a simulated manufacturing environment. By using TORCAM CNCez to test a program, the student needs to use a CNC machine tool only for final confirmation of a design.

Two other key features of this learning system are safety and comfort. Since this software will emulate a CNC milling machine or CNC lathe, the student can do all the necessary CNC programming training and later write, edit, and test new CNC programs on the computer. Since a CNC machine is not actually being used, both the student and the instructor can learn in a safer and more comfortable environment.

One special feature of TORCAM CNCez is that the on-screen simulator and the programming editor are interactive. As the user creates and edits CNC programs, the screen graphics immediately show the result of each new step, providing instant feedback. Students will know immediately which part of their program generated which result.

For users with prior knowledge and experience with CNC programming, the TORCAM CNCez simulation software can be used to test existing CNC programs which follow the EIA/ISO standards, and to write and edit new ones. The workbook may be used as a reference guide, or the user may select the HELP menu option on the screen for assistance.

A WARNING TO THE READY
The objective of this workbook and software combination is to teach CNC programming. It is NOT to instruct the user on machining terms or procedures, nor does skill in the use of the simulation software mean that actual hands-on experience with manufacturing equipment can be eliminated. All speeds and feeds used in this manual have been tested on machinable wax only, and are not recommended for any harder materials or metals.

All programs in this manual have been tested for reliability. Some changes may be required to adopt these programs to non-TORCAM CNC machines. Please consult your CNC machine operations manual.

This book is poorly written, contains many errors in programming method and is also missing a lot of crucial CNC topics.

I have taught Introduction to Philosophy in various class sizes and at various academic institutions for more than fifteen years. I enjoy it tremendously but I also know that teaching the course is challenging.

A genuine introduction to philosophy requires a conversation between us, the students, and the content. However, students are often reluctant to engage in genuine conversations about great ideas. Why think, argue, or speak in class if listening to lectures seems so much more convenient? My textbook, Ultimate Questions: Thinking about Philosophy 3e, is constructed to get students actively engaged in doing philosophy together with you in the classroom. More than 100 Food for Thought Exercises in the text are designed to generate lively classroom discussions and sharpen critical thinking. The exercises are designed to make the philosophy classroom more interactive and they help students realize whether they have grasped important concepts clearly.

My text does not presuppose that students already have a natural curiosity to think and talk about great philosophical questions. Instead, it is designed to awaken such curiosity by showing them how the great questions arise naturally in our ordinary ways of being. The book is an invitation for students to realize that the great questions of philosophy are invariably intertwined with the way all of us live every day. To study the great questions then, is ultimately an attempt to get to know ourselves.

Students read much less than we instructors hope. I have tried to write Ultimate Questions such that students are seduced into reading. I have tried to write clearly without oversimplifying any philosophical position or problem. My hope is that the book can provide for students partly what a lecture normally provides, so that instructors have more freedom to use class time for discussions, group work, role play or any other form of active learning.

Satisfactory Introduction in Some Respects

I’ve really had a difficult time finding decent books to use in teaching my introductory philosophy courses. Given all the approaches one could take to a first introduction to philosophy, e.g., historical, secondary-literary synopsis, excerpts of works on big issues, and a survey of the most important texts in philosophy, I think Rauhut’s books are some of the better ones I’ve found. In the way that I just phrased that last remark I hope it is clear that I have reservations. Let me say what’s good about this book, first, then I’ll remark on a few of its shortcomings.

One of the things this book has going for it is that Rauhut covered some of the big issues in philosophy, and has a correlated text with excerpts from all the best papers pertaining to the subject. That is, the individual topics in this book, which constitute its chapters’ focuses (e.g., morality, the god question, the basic question of epistemology, namely, how can we know anything, etc.) has a sort of companion text (“Readings on the Ultimate Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy”), in which the chapter are filled with portions of text written by great philosophers in history, as well as contemporary scholars in philosophy departments, sometimes referred to as “philosophers.” Taken together, the potency of this text (and the other one, too), “Ultimate Questions” triple their value.

This text is clearly written and reasonably well thought out. One of the things it does more, which I think other texts need to do, is include diagrams, such as flow diagrams. Being a secondary text, whose function is, primarily, to explain the big issues in a somewhat thorough, yet quick way, requires a great deal of organization. I think this book achieves this with its setup and clear communication. The most valuable part of this book is, without a question, the part that finds no correlating chapter in the “Readings on the Ultimate Questions,” namely, the chapter on “philosophical tools.” I cannot express how much I would have liked to have known of and had access to this chapter when I taught from the “Readings” text. Most students come into a philosophy class without the slightest clue about what reason is, what constitutes an argument, and how to evaluate an argument –an unfortunate consequence of the American K-12 system and its obsession with standards, process, and memorization, rather than understanding. Even if Rauhut doesn’t do as thoroughgoing of a job as I’d like, the content contained is basically priceless and lifts a great burden from both teacher and student (or layperson) when it comes to trying to gain some traction in the area of reason and other philosophical tools (e.g., methods of inquiry).

The bad in this book is really the bad that exists in the “Readings”: what was chosen as subjects aren’t really the most important subjects in philosophy. They may be some of the more approachable and more interesting, depending on your background. In some places, Rauhut certainly tries to tie in important issues. For example, there is no chapter on metaphysics or, say, metaphysical monism versus dualism; but Rauhut does draw Descsrtes’ dualism into a chapter on the nature of personal identity. In essence, the issue I have with this text and the other is that the reader could come away from the text, having read it fairly carefully, and come away not knowing what metaphysics is. Another example: not really having said anything about philosophy’s relation to science is a deficiency. Finally, I don’t like that there is much in the way of historical reference to the development of the ideas presented; the history informs us well of philosophical developments, how they developed, why, and what motivating/influential forces were in play. There are some portion of philosophical history (e.g., medieval) and major branches of philosophy (e.g., aesthetics) that aren’t even covered, maybe not even mentioned! This is not to say that other texts are as comprehensive as I’d like –in fact, I have not found a completely satisfactory text, but merely that this is as good as the best I’ve found so far, and certainly sufficient in many respects.

If you want a big-issues approach in an introduction to philosophy, I can recommend reading this book and its companion, “Readings on the Ultimate Questions.” If you want some of the more important issues in philosophy, I can make some recommendations, including Bertrand Russell’s “The Problems of Philosophy,” for one. If you want a historical approach, Enoch Stumpf’s text is very readable and gentle.

Excellent!

This is possibly one of the best books for teaching beginning philosophy. Although the author is slightly biased in some sections, he offers clear paths of inquiry without supplying packaged, ready-made answers.

This is a book for those with some background in philosophy and especially teachers of high school or beginning philosophy for lesson ideas. I have used this book many times with great success and have shared it with colleagues and students.

It could also be titles,"Philosophy about Thinking."

Really Accessible Philosophy Textbook

Most textbook authors, probably trying to sound smart, make their subjects seem boring and academic. But this one is very readable, well-organized, and full of provocative questions and examples from the author's own life. Can we prove that we have persistent self-identities? Can we prove God exists or doesn't exist? This is challenging stuff, but the book reads very easily.
