Amazon.com Review
The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.

In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look.

From Library Journal
"Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle." In today's service business, author Beckwith suggests this old marketing adage is likely to guarantee failure. In this timely addition to the management genre, Beckwith summarizes key points about selling services learned from experience with his own advertising and marketing firm and when he worked with Fortune 500 companies. The focus here is on the core of service marketing: improving the service, which no amount of clever marketing can make up for if not accomplished. Other key concepts emphasize listening to the customer, selling the long-term relationship, identifying what a business is really selling, recognizing clues about a business that may be conveyed to customers, focusing on the single most important message about the business, and other practical strategies relevant to any service business. Actor Jeffrey Jones's narration professionally conveys these excellent ideas appropriate for public libraries.?Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Advertising professional Beckwith startles and disarms all potential doubting Thomases with one fact--that by the year 2005, 8 out of 10 Americans will be working in a service business. Chapters here are remarkably short; they are intended to convey one point (summarized in one sentence in boldface italics) and are blessedly free of jargon. Hints and tips cover the conventional four Ps of marketing--product, promotion, place, and price--in an irreverent and iconoclastic manner; nothing is sacrosanct. Stories from every corner of life illustrate and drive home messages. In a quandary about pricing? Read the Picasso story to remember, "Don't charge by the hour; charge by the years." About the value of research? Forget questionnaires and focus groups; instead, ask individuals what improvements are needed--not the dreaded "What don't you like?" A very human, much-needed book to savor and be refreshed by. Barbara Jacobs

Digestible Insights
By Michael L. Perla
As others have written, this book is not about creating a complex marketing design or plan. What it does offer is quick, a page or so, USA today-like snippets of insightful observations about marketing in general, and service marketing in particular.
As the title indicates, selling and/or marketing an intangible service is a different process than tangible product marketing. As the author writes, most people cannot evaluate the skills of an accountant, or lawyer, or any number of professional services. We often look for tangible proxies that indicate the professional's level of expertise and success (e.g., fancy offices, degrees on the wall, presentation, etc.).
If you read this book in its entirety in one session, you are bound to remember nothing in the sea of facts and tidbits (click on the table of contents link to get a feel for the topic areas). I've found the best way to read the book is to ponder on a few points every night and/or week, while attempting to apply them to a salient situation in your life. Overall, this book has some interesting and useful insights, and is a good read when you have a few minutes to spare.

THE Marketing Book
By O. Halabieh
As Harvey Mackay notes on the cover "The one book on marketing I'd have if I could have just one. A CLASSIC." This books changes the way we think about marketing: "It begins with an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of services - their invisibility and intangibility - and of the unique nature of service prospects and users - their fear, their limited time, their sometimes illogical ways of making decisions, and their most important drives and needs". Harry then goes on to discuss a number of fundamental topics: surveying and research, planning, positioning and focus, pricing, branding, communicating and selling, nurturing and keeping clients etc.

Below are some excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

a) "Your opportunities for growth often lie outside the confines of your current industry description." - This can be reworded to apply to one's personal career

b) "In most professional services, you are not selling expertise - because your expertise is assumed, and because your prospect cannot intelligently evaluate your expertise anyway. Instead, you are selling a relationship. And in most cases, that is where you need the most work."

c) "First, accept the limitations of planning...Second, don't value planning for its result: the plan...Third, don't plan your future. Plan your people."

d) "Positioning (Al Ries and Jack Trout) says: 1) You must position yourself in your prospect's mind. 2) Your position should be singular: one simple message. 3) Your position must set you apart from your competitors. 4) You must sacrifice. You cannot be all things to all people; you must focus on one thing."

e) "To succeed spectacularly in a service business, you must get all your ducks in a row. Marketing is just one duck. But it is one very big duck."

f) "...And for marketing purposes - for the purpose of attracting and keeping business - a service is only what prospects and clients perceive it to be. So "get better reality": Improve your service quality. But never forget that the prospect and client must perceive that quality."

g) "Services are human. Their successes depend on the relationships of people...But you can spot some patterns in people. The more you can see the patterns and understand people, the more you will succeed - and this book as written with the hope that it will help you do just that."

h) "Nothing beats experience, of course, but reading books about others' experiences comes in a competent second. The risk in learning only from personal experience is that too often, we draw conclusions from too little data - we learn too much from too little. We also tend to credit our company's successes to everything that went into them...And so we keep repeating things that hurt our business."

One of the best features of the book is the way its written and structured. Each area is covered through small stories featuring numerous real-life examples. This makes the book very practical and enjoyable to read. All in all, a great book on Marketing and one that is recommended for anyone. We are all in some aspect a marketer of services.

As a final remark, you can follow the author Harry Beckwith's latest thoughts here: [...]

Worth the price for 1.5 pages rated below
By S. Hall
It's a good read, but there is a page and half that has had a major impact, showing me where I have a huge blindspot in business and how I stop my own progress. This page and a half is possibly the most important material I've read in a book in several years (for me it applies directly).

The author talks about the Fallacy of Planning in a business setting. He ranks plans in this order:

1. Very Good
2. Good
3. Best
4. Fair
5. Poor

Why is Good ahead of Best? Simple, to arrive at Best takes orders of magnitude more planning than Good. Also, who defines Best? How much time is spent creating the Best plan? Will Best stand the test of time? Can everyone agree on Best? Would Good work just as well as Best in the real world? Is Best satisfying the client's need better than a Good plan?

Choosing the "Best" plan leads to Paralysis by Analysis. Good plans allow for quick action and constant improvement. The most successful people in the world have acted on Good plans that they have refined over time. An actionable plan is more successful than a plan that never leaves the drawing board!

Personally, I've fallen into the Best trap many times. There is no such thing as a "Best" plan. Going forward the "Best" plan will be the "Good" plan that I can put into action and refine over time!

A lightbulb went off in my head when I got this concept. Thank you Harry for this valuable lesson.

Should be renamed "The Little Book of Squeal-worthy Skin Care products!" :-)
By Call of Kthalia
This book has been a surprise gem for me. I've always loved makeup colors and looks, but then tended to be very low maintenance, personally. However, I recently decided I was going to put a touch more effort into "me" time, starting with the purchase of a Clarisonic and some other skin care goodies. I saw this book cited in a magazine article where the author's portrait showcased her RADIANT complexion. She seriously glowed in this fantastic non-makeup looking way. I decided to buy the book and dove right in to the author's world of Korean skin care.

Although there are definitely moments where I wish the author went more in-depth, or things were outlined perfectly clearly, I know from experience that food, health and beauty is never "one size fits all". So, instead I allowed myself to enjoy getting carried away to another world I had never really considered before: Seoul. The author's wonderful description of the people, city, food and culture made me want to sign up for a trip instead of just a new beauty regimen... and the plane tickets sure are cheaper than going to Europe. *fidget-fidget*

Well, since I don't know a lick of Korean and now isn't a good time for a trip, I used the inspiration and suggestions from this book to pick up an assortment of (freaking seriously adorable!!) beauty products from Amazon. She does have a cute little website, and I was considering supporting her until I saw the huge array of offerings on Amazon-- and I am sorry, but I am spoiled by Amazon Prime! Search for: Tonymoly, Etude, Too Cool for School-- and others!

I have to say that with the authors suggestions I felt the confidence trying things out, when I may have been more worried before reading this book if the products were legit. And, wow!, is she right-- Korean beauty products are mostly beyond adorable (think pandas, dinosaurs, puppies, fruit with faces and so many colors!) and mostly really frugally priced. Many things are under $10 and pretty much all are under $20. For under $150 I was able to pick up the most adorable hairband with kitty ears to hold back my hair while I give myself my daily "spa time", a hairband that is a fuzzy bow with dots, an awesome-sounding oil cleanser, water cleansers that look like eggs in an egg carton, pore cleaning strips that look like strawberries, brightening mask that looks like a tomato, a whole set of paper masks with cute wrappers that do different things, a huge set of lip glosses that look like bunnies, a cushion compact in my super pale skin tone, a triple set of blotting papers with a box that has dinosaurs walking through the city on the cover, and a light powder that looks like a smiling kitty (I know it's not dewy but I have very oily skin! It's for my t-zone only!). I also was lured into getting these little foam strawberry hair curlers... and a couple things doubled up for Christmas presents. Tiny, cute and frugal? What great qualities for stocking stuffers!

Thanks to this not-so little book I feel like I have not only been opened up to a huge new world of affordable and adorable beauty products, but also to the thought of really enjoying my "me" time. I have been attempting to begin treating my skin as I will when I have all my new goodies and just the mindset has me feeling and looking better than ever. I am so excited for the goodies to arrive, I actually want to *Squee!* out loud, and be assured I will review each item as it arrives and I try it out. A warm-fuzzy thanks to Charlotte Cho! Maybe someday I will get to visit Seoul, have Korean BBQ, soju and a fun shopping spree! Until then there are animal-shaped face mists! :D

UPDATE: 11/25/2015 A bunch of my goodies have already arrived (TY Amazon Prime!) and I am blown away by the packaging and how effective so many things have been even upon first use. Also I have marveled at how nice the other products, like the essency masks, have felt (which I hope to have positive cumulative effects!) that I will be rereading this book to look for more of her "favorites" to try down the line. After going through a "more-multi than I am used to"- step program this evening, with a double cleanse and a mask and some treatments... my skin looked amazing. Literally the best I can remember it looking post-puberty. Even my dear exasperated boyfriend said, "YES! I can see your glowing and poreless skin from here!! No I am not coming in there to stare at your nose!" :P Again, Thank you Charlotte Cho! :D

UPDATE: 01/04/2015 I've been using methods and products suggested or influenced by having read this book for a couple months now and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. My one-time, clogged, blemish-prone, sensitive, starting to show tiny signs of aging, skin has been looking nicer and nicer. And I've been spending a fortune on product after product, looking for results without burning my face off, for decades now. The products I've found because of the influence of reading this book have given me my best skin since I was a pre-teen. Plus, I am enjoying it as "me" time, complete with cat ears headbands to hold my hair out of my face while I wear sheet masks and use products that come in panda bear-shaped tubes. I feel giddy sometimes at the whole experience- feeling fresh and pretty as well as having fun and enjoying myself. Oh, and though there are a lot of products I have gotten, some of which I have reviewed already, too-- if you have similar skin you may like "Mizon Snail" and "Skin Food Peach" products, in particular. Both of which you will find reviewed in my profile. I hope this helps and I wish you lots of luck with your skin care program! :-)

A Must Buy
By Morgan
I've been a fan of Sokoglam for I think almost two years or maybe it was a year and half. I love the beauty blog/store so when I found out that they were coming out with a book I immediately preordered the book without any regrets. This book is everything you need to know about the korean skincare and beauty. The book breaks everything down from what is double cleansing to why you should wear sunscreen to the ten step korean skincare routine. The book itself blew my mind countless of times like did you know not watching your face can causing aging? 0_0 Am I the only that thought that sun damaged caused wrinkles not laziness? This book also showed me that I was going around the whole korean skincare routine wrong. Not only was I using a face mask first then washing my face with a double cleaner and using the water base wash first then oil based last. I was also using products that I thought were working that weren't (I was in denial). I also learned that it's okay not to use the same brand over and over again.
I'm not going to ruin everything for you! This book is a must if you want healthy, glowing, and beautiful skin! The book is not boring nor is full of dull information that you can barely understand. Charlotte Cho breaks everything down so even a 8 year old could understand it and she add a bit of humor to it. She adds little stories about her own skincare problems and her shell shock experiences of living in South Korea for the first time. In a way you feel like you are talking to a friend that is offering you tons of amazing advice instead of listening to a doctor in a monotone voice telling you to apply these chemicals to your face. I don't know about everyone else but I had fun reading this book.
Once again you should buy this book because wow it's amazing I would know I just finished it all in two days. I have no regrets making this purchase at all.

Awesome gift -- great guide to skin care and (surprise!) travel
By Sara Hayden
I've had the great pleasure of working alongside Charlotte Cho as she's brought this book to life. Skin care used to be of zero interest to me: "Have a zit? Slap on some makeup!" was my philosophy. But Cho's accessible anecdotes and Gemma Correll's endlessly witty illustrations make the mundane fun, and now I'm hooked -- I feel like I've done something sinfully awful if I go to bed without double cleansing and toning! Can someone pass the sheet masks, please?

One of my favorite aspects of the book is how she recollects her experience growing up Korean American, and later takes that background straight to Seoul. It provides a fresh window to this vibrant city, giving me some serious wanderlust.

For those interested in travel, beauty, and well-being, this is on my holiday gift list for oh-so-many friends and relatives this year.

This is a derivative publication of Dr Cheng's Field and Wave Electromagnetics (2nd edition). It has been developed in response to the need for a text that supports the mastery of this difficult subject. Therefore, in addition to presenting electromagnetics in a concise and logical manner, the text includes end-of-section review questions, worked examples, boxed remarks that alert students to key ideas and tricky points, margin notes, and point-by-point chapter summaries. Examples and applications invite students to solve problems and build their knowledge of electromagnetics. Application topics include: electric motors, transmission lines, waveguides, antenna arrays and radar systems.

From the Inside Flap

This book is designed for use as an undergraduate text on engineering electromagnetics. Electromagnetics is one of the most fundamental subjects in an electrical engineering curriculum. Knowledge of the laws governing electric and magnetic fields is essential to the understanding of the principle of operation of electric and magnetic instruments and machines, and mastery of the basic theory of electromagnetic waves is indispensable to explaining action-at-a-distance electromagnetic phenomena and systems.

Because most electromagnetic variables are functions of three-dimensional space coordinates as well as of time, the subject matter is inherently more involved than electric circuit theory, and an adequate coverage normally requires a sequence of two semester-courses, or three courses in a quarter system. However, some electrical engineering curricula do not schedule that much time for electromagnetics. The purpose of this book is to meet the demand for a textbook that not only presents the fundamentals of electromagnetism in a concise and logical manner, but also includes important engineering application topics such as electric motors, transmission lines, waveguides, antennas, antenna arrays, and radar systems.

I feel that one of the basic difficulties that students have in learning electromagenetics is their failure to grasp the concept of an electromagnetic model. The traditional inductive approach of starting with experimental laws and gradually synthesizing them into Maxwell's equations tends to be fragmented and incohesive; and the introduction of gradient, divergence e, and curl operations appears to be ad hoc and arbitrary. On the other hand, the extreme of starting with the entire set of Maxwell's equations, which are of considerable complexity, as fundamental postulates is likely to cause consternation and resistance in students at the outset. The question of the necessity and sufficiency of these general equations is not addressed, and the concept of the electromagnetic model is left vague.

This book builds the electromagnetic model using an axiomatic approach in steps--first for static electric fields, then for static magnetic fields, and finally for time-varying fields leading to Maxwell's equations. The mathematical basis for each step is Helmholtz's theorem, which states that a vector field is determined to within an additive constant if both its divergence and its curl are specified everywhere. A physical justification of this theorem may be based on the fact that the divergence of a vector field is a measure of the strength of its flow source and the curl of the field is a measure of strength of its vortex source. When the strengths of both the flow source and the vortex source are specified, the vector field is determined.

For the development of the electrostatic model in free space, it is only necessary to define a single vector (namely, the electric field intensity E) by specifying its divergence and its curl as postulates. All other relations in electrostatics for free space, including Coulomb's law and Gauss's law, can be derived from the two rather simple postulates. Relations in material media can be developed through the concept of equivalent charge distributions of polarized dielectrics.

Similarly, for the magnetostatic model in free space it is necessary to define only a single magnetic flux density vector B by specifying its divergence and its curl as postulates; all other formulas can be derived from these two postulates. Relations in material media can be developed through the concept of equivalent current densities. Of course, the validity of the postulates lies in their ability to yield results that conform with experimental evidence.

For time-varying fields, the electric and magnetic field intensities are coupled. The curl E postulate for the electrostatic model must be modified to conform with Faraday's law. In addition, the curl B postulate for the magnetostatic model must also be modified in order to be consistent with the equation of continuity. We have, then, the four Maxwell's equations that constitute the electromagnetic model. I believe that this gradual development of the electromagnetic model based on Helmholtz's theorem is novel, systematic, pedagogically sound, and more easily accepted by students.

A short Chapter 1 of the book provides some motivations for the study of electromagnetism. It also introduces the source functions, the fundamental field quantities, and the three universal constants for free space in the electromagnetic model. Chapter 2 reviews the basics of vector algebra, vector calculus, and the relations of Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinate systems. Chapter 3 develops the governing laws and methods of solution of electrostatic problems. Chapter 4 is on steady electric current fields and resistance calculations. Chapter 5 deals with static magnetic fields. Chapter 6, on time-varying electromagnetic fields, starts with Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, and leads to Maxwell's equations and wave equations. The characteristics of plane electromagnetic waves are treated in Chapter 7. The theory and application s of transmission lines are studied in Chapter 8. Further engineering applications of electromagnetic fields and waves are discussed in Chapter 9 (waveguides and cavity resonators) and Chapter 10 (antennas, antenna arrays, and radar systems). Much of the material has been adapted and reduced from my larger book, Field and Wave Electromagnetics, but in this book I have incorporated a number of innovative pedagogical features.

Each chapter of this book starts with an overview section that provides qualitative guidance to the topics to be discussed in the chapter. Throughout the book worked-out examples follow important formulas and quantitative relations to illustrate methods for solving typical problems. Where appropriate, simple exercises with answers are included to test students' ability to handle related situations. At irregular intervals, a group of review questions are inserted after several related sections. These questions serve to provide an immediate feedback of the topics just discussed and to reinforce students' qualitative understanding of the material. Also, a number of pertinent remarks usually follow the review questions. These remarks contain some points of special importance that the students may have overlooked. When new definitions, concepts, or relations are introduced, short notes are added in the margins to emphasize their significance. At the end of each chapter there is a summary with bulleted items summarizing the main topics covered in the chapter. I hope that these pedagogical aids will prove to be useful in helping students learn electromagentics and its applications.

Many dedicated people, besides the author, are involved in the publication of a book such as this one. I wish to acknowledge the interest and support of Senior Editor Eileen Bernadette Moran and Executive Editor Don Fowley since the inception of this project. I also wish to express my appreciation to Production Supervisor Helen Wythe for her friendly assistance in keeping the production on schedule, as well as to Roberta Lewis, Amy Willcutt, Laura Michaels, and Alena Konecny for their contributions. Jim and Rosa Sullivan of Tech-Graphics were responsible for the illustrations. To them I offer my appreciation for their fine work. Above all, I wish to thank my wife, Enid, for her patience, understanding and encouragement through all phases of my challenging task of completing this book.

This book is no good

It's a condenced version of another one of Mr. Cheng's books and every example has you flipping back and forth between 5 different pages no less then 10 pages apart. The "Preface" says, "Much of the material has been adapted and reduced from my larger book, Field and Wave Electromagnetics..." Examples do not explain the work, I found these reviews while looking for a substitute book to help me through this class.

Unique development, but lacking in a few key areas
By Ryanov
Cheng's logical development of electromagnetics is indeed novel, but the only real way to appreciate it is to first have had a decently rigorous course on electromagnetism or have read another electromagnetics book. The reason why I say this is because at the onset of the book, Cheng puts forth his electromagnetic model, but there is absolutely almost no motivation for this model. It seems completely arbitrary, although it does yield familiar results. No basis for the model based on experiment is provided; therefore, I suggest that one first read a book that takes one through the historical path of development -- leading from experiment to generalization. Also, I have found a major error in the theory of the book. In Chapter 6 when Cheng is talking about potential functions, he correctly derives a formula for the curl of a potential function. Now, the basis of the book is that one can develop electromagnetics in an orderly fashion by specifying both the divergence and the curl of a vector. So, in order to fully develop the potential vector field, he says "we are still at liberty to choose the divergence of A." He then states a formula known as the Lorentz condition for potentials and motivates it simply because it simplifies another equation. However, this is logically incorrect. Just because one knows the curl of a vector field does not mean one is at liberty to state its divergence. Again, Cheng is completely arbitrary here and provides no basis for why he does this other than the fact that it simplifies an equation. Many other books correctly deal with this matter -- even on the introductory level. What really happens is that the Lorentz condition is a result of the relation between electromagnetics and the theory of relativity; when electromagnetic theory and relativity are combined, the Lorentz condition follows logically. Sadiku's Elements of Electromagnetics correctly states this, as do other texts. The reason why this is so important is that this is the crucial link between showing that electromagnetic fields that vary through time are represented as waves! This violates the nature of the book -- that it should be logically consistent, orderly, and non-abrubt in its reasoning. Finally, I would like to say that Cheng's book Field and Wave Electromagnetics has the same downfall. However, I believe every serious student, engineer, and even scientist should read through Cheng's Field and Wave Electromagnetics because it is more rigorous. What Cheng has done is really interesting, but I simply cannot recommend this for any first time student. And, do not buy this book; buy his Field and Wave Electromagnetics because it is superior. Last and final note: the development of transformers is much inferior to most books (including his own Field and Wave Eletromagnetics). Check out my review on his other text.

too brief
By A Customer
I liked this book because of it's elegance and the fact that there are hardly any errors. But, I thought it expected the student to make too many assumptions in order to do the problems. This is frustrating for a first course (or any course) in electromagnetics when you're just gettting used to using vector calculus and are new to Maxwell's equations.
Another problem I had is the lack of down-to-earth descriptions. To derive a formula and add one sentence at the end does not convey what is physically going on.
I thought "Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics" by Fawwz T. Ulaby was much more accessible for a first course in electromagnetics.
