About the Author
Bruce Smith is a former Technical Editor of Acorn User magazine and founder of Bruce Smith Books. Around half of his 150 books have covered the topic of computers and computer programming. He was one of the first to write about the ARM chip when it was originally released. He is well known for his easy, lucid style of writing and his books have been translated into five languages. Very practical

It is easy to find good books about C# and Java. However, for many more specialized development tools it is hard to find a book that provides what a beginner needs. In many cases, a book thoroughly covers the language commands, but leaves the reader staring a a blank command line wondering "What, exactly, do I need to type to compile and run my program?" Bruce Smith's books do not fall into this trap. Smith provides not only the necessary coaching and instruction in assembly language for the Raspberry Pi's ARM processor, but also gives clear practical instructions for getting everything to work.

One of the reasons I bought the book is its introduction to the ARM vector floating-point coprocessor, a topic that often gets short-shrift from authors. If I had to pick one nit with Smith's book, he fails to mention a little trap with assembling coprocessor code. Smith starts the book using the GNU assembler "as" and then moves to using gcc later in the book, which is entirely reasonable. However, some readers might like to know that if you want to assemble vector coprocessor code with "as" rather than gcc you must include the command-line parameter "-mfpu=vfpv2".

Whether you are looking just to have some fun learning assembly language with your Raspberry PI or whether you view the PI as a stepping-stone to greater things ARM, Bruce Smith's book definitely belongs on your shelf.

Great Book!

I'm totally new to Raspberry Pi, Linix, and to Arm processors. This book is clearly written with easy to follow examples. I'm up to chapter 12 so far.

I bought the kindle edition and am reading it on my IPad. The formatting, pictures, and text flow are all superb.

Good basics, but better choices for the experienced

artridges of the World, authored by Frank C. Barnes and edited by Stan Skinner, is always a fun read and generally a good reference book, however, I believe the franchise publishers may be getting a little impatient in releases. The 11th edition was released only 10 months after the 10th edition, while the 10th edition was released almost 3 years after the 9th edition and with more appropriate timing based on new cartridge releases. In short, there wasn't much new included that shouldn't have easily made the 10th edition.

In general, I noticed no particular attempt by the author to update or correct entries that appeared in earlier editions. The 357 SIG is still listed as a new cartridge , with the suggestion that time will tell if it will succeed. The 357 SIG is chambered in almost every performance non 1911 autoloader and in heavy use with Federal agencies including air marshals and the FBI. The 376 Steyr carries an association with the Scout rifle which has not been available in that chamber for years. The Remington SAUM line and the WSM line read like a new introductions. There are some showcase articles on sub .22 caliber rifle cartridges and the Chinese standardization on the 5.8 caliber, although I am hard pressed to know why as the information is of little practical use and of interest to a very limited audience. I would have been happier with a review of the concepts behind the past few years of cartridge releases and the prospects for the future.

Some of the categorizing or editing has gotten a little sloppy and there is a decent amount of redundancy in listings. Virtually every cartridge that appears under the military heading and has found its way into sporting rifle use, is also listed under "Current American Rifle Cartridges; the 7x57mm Mauser, 8x57mm Mauser, 30-06 Springfield, 7.72 NATO, etc. Usually this dilemma of listing is handled with the least appropriate heading get an "See under x Category". Things got a little more foggy with the inclusion of the 303 British under "Current American Rifle Cartridges" with text describing it as the "official British military cartridge until the adoption of the 7.62 NATO" then goes on to indicate it has never been popular in the United States. I am not sure what the term "Current" means as the definition offered by the book makes no sense at all. According to COTW, current cartridges include those where ammunition is still available, even if only by special order, and only if chambered in modern guns, although not necessarily in guns manufactured and sold in the U.S. I guess this also explains the 8mm Remington Magnum and 375 Winchester being listed as current. Under the "Obsolete American Rifle Cartridge Category" you'll find the 405 Winchester, even though ammo and a current rifle is produced, and the 358 Norma Magnum which is not an American cartridge. The 38 Casull is listed as a mainstream handgun cartridge, as is the 32 North American, the latter cartridge I am only aware of being available in the North American Arms Guardian pistol. The 440 Cor-Bon, however, is listed as a proprietary cartridge, as is the 475 Linebaugh, the latter which is chambered in a number of firearms and available outside of the originator as brass and loaded ammo. Proprietary typically means supplied by the manufacturer for use only in their firearms. Based on some of the COTW definitions, the 257 Roberts would be a proprietary cartridge rather than a commercialized wildcat. Where rifle cartridges have the designations "current" and "obsolete", handgun cartridges carry the page heading "handgun cartridges of the world and there is an in page break heading "obsolete" in the middle of the listings - something easy to miss and also inaccurate. As an example, I shoot a Russian Nagant 7.62 revolver with some routine. The cartridge is listed as obsolete, rather than military and I buy newly manufacturers Fiocchi ammo routinely from suppliers.

That said, if I didn't have an earlier edition of Cartridges of the World I would buy a copy of the current release. If I had the 10th edition, I am not so sure. It is a good general reference book and there are few that offer the same. It is just not a book of great detail and sometimes with uneven listing.

Standard Reference Work, though not perfect

If there is one standard handbook for cartridge collectors as well as for "everyday" users, this one should be named foremost. It covers a very large range of current and obsolete cartridge both from the metric and the "imperial" (read: British and American) measurement systems, civilian and military alike. A number of the better-known wildcat and proprietary cartridges are also treated. Almost all cartridges are illustrated (though mostly not with measurements, which are confined to some cumbersome tables at the end of the chapters). While this book is not "the bible" and still contains many (often just minor) errors and inaccuracies, it is infinitely useful, and the well-known new editor, M.L. McPherson, has already made improvements over the previous (7th) edition. I strongly recommend this book as a "must buy" for even a very small firearms reference library - you will end up using it daily.

A great resource for any shooter!

This is a wonderful book to just sit and read for pleasure as well as being a great reference resource. The history of each cartridge is discussed, as well as the author's personal thoughts on each cartridge. The author is a clear, concise writer without being dull, and the range of cartridges covered is very complete. I have used it often. I am currently reading Peter Hathaway Capstick's book, "Death in the Long Grass", which tells of his African hunting experiences. Capstick mentions several dangerous game cartridges, such as the .375 H&H Magnum and the .470 Nitro Express. I looked both up in this book and read about their histories. One very cool thing about the book is that each cartridge is pictured actual size. These big game cartridges are as big as cigars and go about 300 to 400 grain in weight (compared to one of my favorite cartridges, 30-30 win, which is usually about 150 grain). Included in the book are obsolete cartridges and those fascinating wildcat cartridges, such as the author's own creation, called the "thermos bottle" which must be seen to be believed. If firearm cartridges interest you for any reason you should have this book.

I found these most encouraging and insightful, with intentions of sharing the information and healing plant medicines with those I know who struggle with PTSD; are enduring the crushing journey of breast cancer; have lost hope and heart; and for the dratted issues of menopause, PMS, and other female issues (and the men in their lives who struggle with their respective stuff too, that I learned Rose can help with too!).

I'm dying to try many, if not all, of the recipes and delicious recommendations in the book's formulas section/s.

On a personal note, this book was recommended for me to read by another. I found much healing, peace, insight, and joy in my journey through reading this book. I thank that person ten times over...you know who you are... Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The first and most thorough in depth study of roses

In depth review of both the history of this legendary botanic through the middle ages, to modern times. Well referenced studies showing that true Rose Oil is "more than just a pretty smell"...that it has powerful emotional, spiritual and, yes, physical effects. Ms. Ashley also includes a wealth of blends, formulas and suggested uses for the different forms of this historical blossom that are available, from using dried petals, precious cold pressed Rose Hip Seed oil for anti aginng skin care routines, to the glories of true rose otto and rose absolute. She even explores the differences between roses grown in different parts of the world. A must have for the natural perfumer, the aromatherapist, or the rose lover!

True to the Recordings

This book is better than I even hoped it would be. Each one of these pieces is a carbon copy of the original songs as heard on C418's Minecraft: Volume Alpha. Original key signatures, rhythms, and time signatures are all kept. I haven't been able to find anything to the contrary, so it's likely this book was arranged by the composer himself. This is not a watered-down version, and so is NOT going to be suited for less-experienced pianists. (I'm looking at a piece with 6 flats, and there's another in 7/4 time... you get the idea) However, skimming through this I can tell that each of these pieces is totally playable if you're good enough or work hard enough.

However, I sincerely wish more piano adaptations of game/movie soundtracks were this accurate. I don't care that it's challenging. Heck, I'm thoroughly excited! If you like the original music, then you'll LOVE the opportunity to play them as you hear them, and will, with significant practice and discipline, learn a lot along the way.

I am by no means a pianist. I'm self-taught and have learned to play a small handful of what you might call intermediate-level pieces. This book has challenging parts, that's for sure, and I'll have to work up to them, but there is a good variety of difficulties present. At the moment, I'm just picking my way through the easier sections (there're plenty enough) and still getting to hear solid chunks of phrases that I totally recognize from the game. Eventually, I'll pick the song that seems the most reachable and do what I've done with all the other songs I've learned: practice and persevere! Someday I'll be able to play the whole book.

On another note, I would love to see a beginner-level book of this music. So many kids play this game, and if it gets a kid (or enthusiastic adult) actually wanting to learn the piano, then I'm all for it. I know a fair number of kids (mum teaches beginner-level piano) that would be all for it. She can't wait to show them this book, even if at the moment it will be just an incentive to keep learning. She may even water sections down herself, break it into a duet, etc. They'd love it.

Intermediate to Advanced Mood Music

Purchased for my teen daughters who have been playing piano for 8 years. As a point of reference they are on level four of the Faber method books and are accomplished on multiple instruments. They report this sheet music is definitely not for a beginner. My eldest could immediately play a number of them, some of them required a little noodling through. She says the key signatures of a number of the pieces would definitely be trickier for a less experienced student, and the left hand on a few of them is particularly challenging. With that said, the music is very enjoyable. Terrific mood music at just the right level to give them a slight challenge with something new and fun. Direct quote from her, "Some of them are easy to play fingering-wise but the key signatures are so bizarre they would be confusing for a beginner. For instance one of the pieces, Minecraft, has a fingering that is almost the same throughout but the key signature has 6 sharps which is probably a bit much for a beginner."

Good variety of songs

Very advanced piano music, for at least 4th to 5th level. Bought this for my 12 year old, who is 3rd level piano player and been taking lessons for almost 4 years. He will not be able to play this for some time. Good variety of songs, but recommend for advanced player.

About the Author
Samuel Birley Rowbotham (1816 – 1884) was an English inventor and writer who wrote Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe under the pseudonym "Parallax". His work was based on his decade-long studies of the earth and was originally published as a 16-page pamphlet (1849), which he later expanded into a 430-page book (1881). According to his method, which he called Zetetic Astronomy, the earth is an enclosed plane, centered at the North Pole and bounded along its outward edge by a wall of ice, with the sun, moon, planets, and stars only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth.

Good book, a little tough to read with the smaller print. Many proven experiments. No one could read the book and not know that the earth is flat, unless they just want to lie to themselves..

This is a great book with documentation of experiments which you can reproduce yourself. I especially like the chart of distances of the earth's curvature where you should or shouldn't see objects any longer below the "horizon".
