The greatest historical fiction saga ever written

My excitement at seeing this compilation of Bernard Cornwell's brilliant Warlord Chronicles made available on Kindle cannot be overstated. I am a die-hard fan of Mr. Cornwell's work and have read nearly every book published during his prolific career. I already own well-thumbed hardcover copies of The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur but immediately jumped at the chance to enjoy these books once again with the convenience of Kindle.

The books themselves are simply masterpieces of setting, plotting and character development. The archetypes that Mr. Cornwell uses in many of his other books were obviously inspired by the characters in this trilogy. Derfel, Merlin, Sansum, Nimue, Arthur, Guinevere, Culwch, Lancelot, and more...I can vividly recall the details of each of them like they were old friends. What happens to them takes on personal resonance because they are so well-developed.

A particular strength of Mr. Cornwell's writing is immersing the reader in a highly accurate and detailed world of the past. It seems almost unnecessary to describe how well the battles and fighting scenes are written because those are what Mr. Cornwell does best. The contrast between the glory of the works of the Roman Empire and the squalor of Dark Ages Britain is starkly illustrated, similarly with pagan Druidic traditions and early Christian rites. This is an in-depth examination of society, religion, politics, war, and economy as they might have been during Arthur's time.

Many of the plot developments remain shocking even for the experienced Cornwell reader. Kingdoms rise and fall, political machinations abound, and all the while the force of nature that is the Saxon invasion lurks in the background and gradually comes to the fore. No one feels safe, with no sense of plot armor for the main characters just because they are main characters. Terrible things can and will happen to them.

If you haven't already read the Warlord Chronicles then this is a great opportunity to get them all for a ridiculously reasonable price. I am jealous of anyone who has the privilege of reading the books for the first time. I suspect that most Cornwell devotees who own Kindles will have already taken the plunge and are happily re-immersing themselves in the world of Brittania.

Note on the Kindle edition: the font seems to be one size larger than what most Kindle books use as default. This is a very minor quibble. Thankfully, the map of Britain has made a smooth transition into the electronic form. The clear definition of the inking was preserved; none of the blurriness on Kindle pictures that can cause eye-aches here. Other publishers please take note!

Great books

Good books. This is one of the reasons I bought a kindle. I read these books a while ago, and have tried to get them in kindle-format for a while, and an very happy that they are now available. It is all three books of the "Warlord" series in one sitting, so be ready to lose some sleep... Arthurian legend without any frills. At a little over five dollars for three books, you can't go wrong with this purchase, and I do believe that this is what kindle-readers are looking for. If you liked the Saxon stories, you'll love this book.

absolutely amazing

I have only given one 5 star in my historical fiction reviews (count of monte cristo) . I thought long and hard about this review and could give it no other than a 5. It is everything a historical fiction should be. It is everything an epic should be. This is one book that really is what the other reviews say it is. 25 thousand glorious words of pure fun.

Best book on acting I've ever read!

I've read Strasberg, Adler, Meisner, Suzuki, Morris, Mamet, Chekov and several other acting books by lesser-known authors. Without question, Guskin's book is the best, most immediately usable method I have ever encountered. Guskin gives so many useful exercises to undertake his innovative approach along with a great deal of advice for solving a myriad of problems and issues actors face.

When I began reading Guskin's book I was intrigued but skeptical. The approach seemed like it just might be extraordinary, but I had questions as to whether it would work within certain contexts I faced as an actor. For example, what do I do when I'm in the middle of an audition and I freeze and nothing is coming to me? What good is Guskin's approach then? Much to my delight, Guskin addresses this question in a thorough and satisfying way. In fact, Guskin answered all of my practical acting questions and gives simple, usable solutions which all fall within the context of his unique acting approach.

Just like any acting approach, ultimate success comes with undertaking his advice and practicing, practicing, practicing his approach. Do this and you will reap great rewards.

My one slight reservation, which doesn't diminish the power of the book, is that casting directors for film and television often want you to come into an auditon situation with a 'final performance' for the audition. They do not want you to 'play' or 'discover' various versions of your performance during your audition. Casting directors for film and TV want you to give them the character as it is stated in the written character breakdown that they give you. Yes, this 'final performance' too, can be accomplished using Guskin's technique, but one needs to go into such audition situations very well-rehearsed beforehand.

Indeed, Guskin is correct in asserting that this very preconceived notion of character required by film and TV casting directors is far less prevalent in the theater and in theater auditions. This is not a caveat, just some additional info.

Truly the finest, most simple, practical and usable acting book I've ever read.

Just Get Real!

Harold Guskin's approach is brilliant in its simplicity. He takes you away from "techniques" and back to the reality of being in the moment. When I practice his approach I'm able to truly listen and dialogue with the other actors on a deeper level, and to respond to their words and mine from an internally, gut-motivated, truly living and experiencing in the moment place. From the stage or the audience the result is more exciting, more alive, and much more meaningful. I never have to try to memorize lines when I work from this angle either. The words take on a life of their own and take up residence, flowing freely when the time comes. The result is a fresher and more alive characterization too -- not "overstudied". Mr. Guskin's approach is refreshing. I urge every actor to buy this book, get real, and stop acting.

Even a beginner can benefit from this book.

After taking an acting class for the past two months, I have had various highs and lows both on stage and off. This book prepares you to accept those accidents of creativity and freedom that make good acting. The author is not exponent of any particular school of thought or ideology. Rather he uses his real world experience as an acting coach to such players as Kevin Kline, Matt Dillon, Bridget Fonda, Glenn Close and many others to show how vulnerability and "taking words off the page" rather than memorizing them will contribute to unexpected and startling performances.
His advice for conquering fear, relaxing and "going with the flow" is unconventional, but delightfully intelligent. The author speaks out on auditions, being on stage, and his biggest push is for actors to "be themselves" and let the words in the script speak for themselves. To stop acting, is to start being real, to finding the truth--and if I sound like I'm spouting gibberish, I assure that his writing is clear, concise, logical and well reasoned--and will lead to a deeper and more thoughtful understanding of acting.

Dark and absorbing

Mark and Deb are in their 40s and their marriage is on the rocks. Deb has a drinking problem. Mark has a big crush on their neighbor Karen. Deb thinks they're having an affair, but meanwhile she is having an affair with Owen, age 18, who is also carrying on with Karen's daughter Elana, who is best friends with Deb's daughter Riley. And that's just the first few chapters.....a combustible situation as it is, add to that the fact that there are a couple of extremely disturbed people involved. Things turn very dark very quickly.

I liked the author's style of writing, he's equally good at conveying the thoughts of males and females, adults and teens. His dialogue is authentic and convincing. There are only a few things I'd have changed: we know whodunit pretty early on, so we are just waiting for the denouement. While it is engaging and gripping, there are no twists and turns, no surprises, nothing new revealed at the end. the pace is a bit uneven as well, there's quite a long section about 2/3 in of Karen's indignation when her workmates make assumptions, and then more when the police make assumptions, again when the reporters do, and when her ex-husband does, and when Mark does....whereas the book wraps up in a bit of a hurry, and the exciting climax is pretty short.

I have a feeling this is one of those cases where an author is famous enough that not much editorial work is done, and in this case there are some glaring mistakes.
"His teeth grinded." Pretty sure that isn't even a word.
"She saw the blinds on the living room window rustle." Pretty sure that is a noise. An invisible one.
"Her lower teeth tore into her gums...." I'm trying this. I don't think it's possible.
"She went into the teacher's bathroom, where she lost it, balling hysterically." Ummmm......no.

had to laugh because one of the characters is repeatedly described as looking like Javier Bardem...then I got to the author's photo in the back of the book.....and he looks like Javier Bardem.

This book is just plain bad

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you just need a mindless, fast-paced page-turner. I knew more or less what I was getting myself into when I picked this up, but I didn’t expect it to be so…bad.

I often enjoy books that examine the dark underside of domestic suburban life - Tom Perrotta comes to mind - but this is like if you took a book like that and stripped it of anything intelligent or thought-provoking. Any semblance of attempted satire is obscured by its utter silliness.

The characters are one-dimensional cliches whose actions are so delusional and unbelievable that it’s hard to keep reading. In fact, I’m not even sure why I stuck with it. Maybe for the same reason I’ll sometimes get sucked into watching a Lifetime movie.

It’s a fast, easy read, so it’s hard to feel too resentful toward it, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

the writing was dreadful, the story unbelievable and predictable and it was full of incongruencies - it is one of the few books I have not finished reading. I would not recommend anyone buys this book

About the Author
Keith Morris is a cofounding member of Black Flag, the most recognizable name in West Coast punk, and the Circle Jerks, which cemented his reputation at the forefront of hardcore vocalists. He has recorded over fifteen albums, appeared on countless albums and compilations, and has a half-dozen film credits to his name. The intensity of the music produced by his latest bands OFF! and FLAG are equal to his best work from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, and add to a legendary career that is still being carved out one gig at a time.

Jim Ruland caught the punk rock virus when his mom took him to see the Ramones when he was 15. He has been writing for punk rock zines like Flipside since the early ’90s and has written for every issue of Razorcake, America’s only non-profit independent music fanzine. He is the author of the award-winning novel Forest of Fortune and the short story collection Big Lonesome and is the curator of the irreverent reading series Vermin on the Mount.

Keith i'm so proud of you .The book is so great. You have no problem telling about stuff you feel bad about doing and all the tales were great to listen to as well as the history lesson. Your Raiders still suck and my Cowboys rule Keith. I have known Keith awhile not real close or anything but had his phone number and he came to shows I booked and its always a pleasure to talk to Keith as he is so energetic and like me a smartass in a good way and you know how you stand. He is way nice though ,has great taste in all kinds of music ..This book has taught me so much more about him and the L.A. punk scene. Who knew one day Darby Crash saved his life. This is about the most honest book you'll ever read etc.. I could not let it down and found myself reading it even as I had tooth picks in my eyelids to stay up! This book is a masterpiece and all fans of not just punk but rock music should read..Great book about one of the most insightful passionate punks I've ever met...Sash

I've been reading lots of non-fiction/oral history/auto-biographical books about the punk scene for years. Please Kill Me, We Got the Neutron Bomb, American Hardcore, A Wailing of a Town, the Husker Du story, Bob Mould's book... Jack Grisham, John Doe and Dave Dictor have all recently published their own books... Usually I pick at them here and there when I've got nothing else to do and it takes me weeks to eventually finish them. My Damage is one that I read very quickly. Not often I find myself reading a book at 7AM on a Sunday morning, but that's what happened with this. (The kitties woke me up for their breakfast and then rather than go back to sleep...) It has a great chronological momentum that just kept pulling me along, made it a pleasure to go through its 200+ pages.

I got into punk in 1982 and the Circle Jerks were one of the first bands I glommed on to and claimed as my own, and I still listen to them now and again to this day. Keith is a real character and his story is real, and interesting. Real interesting. Ahem. Anyway, I loved it and think it might be a good read for someone even if they aren't a fan.

I also recommend as a companion piece the Circle Jerks documentary DVD 'My Career As a Jerk.'

Maybe its the soberness or maybe its just a great story of someones life

I start a ridiculous amount of books and usually get about half way through before I move on to the next. Last night I finished a whole book! Maybe its the soberness or maybe its just a great story of someones life. Either way, pick up Keith Morris' book My Damage. Thanks for sharing your story Keith. About the Author

Chef Blaine Wetzel has been cooking since age 14, including as chef-de-partie at Noma in Copenhagen. Chef Wetzel was listed by Food & Wine magazine as one of its Best New Chefs of 2012. He was a James Beard Award finalist in 2013, then won the James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year award in 2014 and Best Chef of the Northwest in 2015. He lives on Lummi Island.

Joe Ray has been writing and shooting food and travel stories around the world for more than fifteen years. His work has appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, WIRED Magazine, and The Guardian. He lives in Seattle.

Sea and Smoke: a trip through the Pacific Northwest devoid of pragmatism.

As a native of the Pacific Northwest, I have waited - nay, lusted - for this book's release since early last summer. I expected to find fresh, manageable, and innovative takes on our myriad natural resources: salmon, halibut, razor clams, mussels, geoducks. Instead, I'm met with what is the most fussy and least pragmatic cookbook on my shelf.

Wetzel and Ray reach for the artistic and - while I'm sure they're good at what they do - fail to provide usable recipes for the average novice epicurean. Roasted madrona branches. Lovage stems. Wild beach peas. Kohlrabi bulbs. Woodruff oil (Wetzel's and Ray's preoccupation veers on obsession). Geranium flowers. Verbena leaves. Flaxseed caramels. Lamb with wheatgrass. A recipe that calls for more lamb marrow than exists in the city of Seattle. A smoked salmon recipe that calls for butter (WHAT?). Spruce branches and angelica leaves.

I'm usually far more articulate when writing a review, but "Sea and Smoke: Flavors from the Untamed Pacific Northwest" is one of the most pretentious and completely unusable cookbooks on my shelf. While I pride myself in having at least a semblance of epicurean nuance and good taste, I simply don't have the time nor resources to source "2 fresh white eggs, preferably from Riley Starks."

This cookbook is haute cuisine for the privileged and the professionals; it won't contribute a semblance of usefulness for the average hobbyist cook who is looking for innovative ways to use widely-available ingredients. In fact, sourcing the ingredients would be nearly impossible for those who aren't entirely dedicated to foraging the Pacific Northwest for attempts at epicurean esotericism (four gooseberries, four salal berries, four aronia berries, four...).

Completely worthless. Wonderful art, and I'm sure it's all delicious, though I have far more proletarian tastes. Somewhere, Tony Bourdain rolls his eyes at books like this.

This book is a lush narrative and pictorial experience about the author's year on Lummi Island cooking the freshest food available in the Northwest with an up-and-coming chef. I'm inspired by the artistry in the kitchens depicted here and the recipes have given me new ideas for my own garden.

A joy to see these masters of their crafts come together

in his Foreword Grant Achatz speaks of chef Blaine Wetzel's determination, confidence and unabashed ambition. Those words fit Sea and Smoke just as well. The photos are stunning, Joe Ray's essays are lovely, and the recipes — let's just say I can't wait for my mother to try some of the delicious meals described here. What a great, original and artistic combination of travelogue, photo collection and cookbook. A true joy to see these masters of their crafts come together. Tip: the ultimate (Christmas) gift for anyone interested in food.

About the Author

Jeff Augen, currently a private investor and writer, has spent more than a decade building a unique intellectual property portfolio of databases, algorithms, and associated software for technical analysis of derivatives prices. His work, which includes more than a million lines of computer code, is particularly focused on the identification of subtle anomalies and price distortions.

Augen has a 25-year history in information technology. As a cofounding executive of IBM’s Life Sciences Computing business, he defined a growth strategy that resulted in $1.2 billion of new revenue and managed a large portfolio of venture capital investments. From 2002 to 2005, Augen was President and CEO of TurboWorx Inc., a technical computing software company founded by the chairman of the Department of Computer Science at Yale University. His books include Trading Options at Expiration, The Option Trader’s Workbook, and The Volatility Edge in Options Trading.

Dense and intense material for the (really) experienced trader

Undeniably, this is the most densest book in a series of books by Augen that includes Trading Options at Expiration: Strategies and Models for Winning the Endgameand The Volatility Edge in Options Trading: New Technical Strategies for Investing in Unstable Markets and a workbook. This book is also perhaps the most targeted one and is unlikely to appeal to a broader audience.

The book in itself is fairly short (written with the gravity similar to academic journals) and has five chapters. The first chapter, though called "basic concepts" really sets the tone for the book and makes it evident that the intended audience is experienced day traders (true to the book title's implication). The chapter provides a very informed analysis of how options market (pricing) has changed in the recent crises, with specific focus on implied volatility swings and volatility skews across strike prices. The second chapter discusses automated trading and emerging trends in that field. Unless the reader uses sophisticated trading systems and is very familiar with programmed trading, the chapter is not likely to sustain significant interest, but the reader is well-advised to force yourself through the chapter. Using various detailed examples, Augen demonstrates the role of statistical analyses in trend exploitation, issues of "over fitting" indicators and volatility distortions. The third chapter (forming bulk of the book) deals with volatility distortions and how to trade them. The discussion is however based on 3-dimensional maps (implied volatility, calendar information and price) and is not really clear how accessible such tools are. Using various examples, Augen demonstrates approaches involving selling time decay and backspreads. The fourth chapter introduces a new charting tool with the premise that the principal goal of an option trader is to "arbitrage differences between implied and fair volatilities". Accessibility of the tools required and even suitability of these methods for the most aggressive casual trader (once whose primary job is not trading) is not clear here either. In the last chapter (perhaps, a neat set up for the next book?) Augen discusses special events focusing on only two - long weekends and associated price distortions and events surrounding markets "digesting" large amounts of news.

Overall, the book does absolute justice to its title - it is indeed targeting distortions for "very brief" (read minutes, mostly) and is fairly dense even for the experienced option trader. After having read all the books from the author in this field, the book on trading options near expiration was a far useful one for a broader audience in at least highlighting significant mechanics associated with expiration pricing dynamics and potential trade constructs. This book, Augen's dedicated focus on day trading, doesn't even pretend to be suitable for anyone but a niche audience. Augen does provide some interesting insights that will benefit any serious options trader, but this time, the book is perhaps a little too far out except for the very experienced and fanatic fans of Augen.

Two key sections

I manage a hedge fund that trades equity and index options. Augen's books are required reading for all our traders. The current book is by far the best. The most important sections for us have been the discussion about calculating volatility in different time frames and the detailed trend analysis using minute-by-minute price changes expressed in standard deviations.

Following the approach outlined in this book, we now calculate a stock's overnight, intraday, and close-to-close volatility. Comparing these values allows us to identify stocks that have large overnight risk or stocks whose options are underpriced during the trading session. We use this information exactly the way the book describes along with our own knowledge to structure trades that are statistically advantaged.

The trend analysis using minute-by-minute price spikes calculated in standard deviations is equally valuable. This approach has dramatically improved our day trading capability. We've been building on the idea using other indicators and time frames longer than 1 minute.

The book is a fine piece of academic quality work. It's far superior to the more common "get rich quick" style investment books that have little value for serious investors. But it's not for beginners. Like the other books in the series, it was written for serious option traders.

It does have some good nuggets

I just finished reading Augen's latest book on options trading, and I would say it is worth a read. I can't give it 5 stars because it really doesn't give that much direction on entry and exit requirements. This is slightly disappointing. An unnecessary amount of pages are devoted to showing that the market is random, so you can't predict it. This book does detail how to use volatility to possibly spot changes trading patterns. It also details how to find possible volatility distortions. It is up to the reader to implement these methods with his/her own programming and back testing. Back testing will be crucial to implementing the strategies outlined in this book because there really isn't that much guidance on when to enter and exit trades trying to capture volatility distortions. You will have to build your own rules after back testing.

Overall, this book isn't overpriced for what you get, so I'd recommend it to anyone who has a good grasp with programming.

Ottolenghi scores big with "Ottolenghi"

My admiration for this author/chef knows no limits. Really. I've been cooking out of Ottolenghi's "Plenty" cookbook for the past year or so at least twice a week and it's changed the family's eating habits and appreciation of good taste astronomically. So when this newly published cookbook (from the restaurant menu) was published in the U.S., I was interested. At the same time, I wondered how the newbie could improve and/or expand on the author's two previous (and terrific) books. I shouldn't have been the least bit skeptical. "Ottolenghi" is even better than its predecessors and chock-a-block full of great new food.

I come to this opinion from the perspective of someone who cooks almost exclusively vegetarian dishes. "Ottolenghi" is about two-thirds non-meat in content. Lots of terrific new vegetable entrees and sides, with the usual emphasis on freshness, herbs, nuts and Middle East/Mediterranean spices. What's really new in the author's approach in this cookbook is a generous section on desserts (most of them adaptations of classics) and many recipes for sauces that can be used with a lot of different entrees or as dips, spreads, etc.

I'm just getting started in using this new book--and in fact started with dessert! How does chocolate chestnut bar sound? A kind of exotic brownie, but richer and creamier than the traditional approach. Killer taste. The same chapter includes a fine recipe for a more traditional brownie, but clearly better, judging from the ingredients.

I'm a total fan of this guy and his books and have been giving them as gifts for the past year. I even gave one to a Moroccan friend who is a wonderful cook, but who became an instant admirer and regular user of Ottolengthi's "Plenty". So get the new one or at least one of the earlier books--it/they will change your life.

I have so many cookbooks some might see it as ridiculous I buy yet another...but this one is really quite special. This book is very inspiring. Nice pictures, they really bring the dishes to life. However, it's the inventive, thoughtful combination of ingredients that just blow me away. Seriously, I just look at the picture of the green bean and pea dish and 20 other variations pop in my head. I am not a recipe follower too often, mostly I just read and then start chopping whatever is in the kitchen. I heartily recommend it even though I have barely read through 15 pages. The authors are VERY specific in their cooking directions in a really good way. They also like their veggies a bit on the crunchy side for our family's taste, but that is simple to change. I wish it was in paperback so it was easier to read in bed.

Great recipes, could have been more user friendly.

I am a fan of Ottolenghi recipes. I follow their Guardian column 'The New Vegetarian'. I find their recipes fresh, modern, bright and fun. So far I have tried couple of eggplant recipes, pistachio cookies and baked okra. All came out great. Their recipes in Guardian-online are fun as well.
Having said that, I wish they had serving suggestions in this book for recipes. It would also help to have some sample menus, specially for someone new to Mediterranean cooking.
I live in US and as such the book is cumbersome to use because of metric system used throughout. I don't mind that much, but it would have been nice to include a conversion table somewhere. Hopefully, there will be a US edition soon, but I could not wait for it to come out.
The book is beautifully laid out and the pictures are very tempting.
Overall, I like the book a lot.
