A day in the life of the average Burmese

A truly unique book in the field of Burma Studies. There has been a lot written about the Burmese government (The State in Myanmar), human rights and Aung San Suu Kyi (Perfect Hostage: A Life of Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's Prisoner of Conscience), and ethnic minorities (Burma: Curse of Independence), but surprisingly little scholarly work about the lives of the average Burmese citizen (Emma Larkin's excellent Finding George Orwell in Burma is more of a journalist's account). Christina Fink's Living Silence in Burma: Surviving under Military Rule, Second Edition fills this gap. Even after 8 years, it remains the premier work one everyday life in the majority of the country.

The book first covers the country's history, particularly the socialist era (which many modern books tend to glance over). Fink then dedicates chapters to aspects of modern life, such as religion, schools, families, and the military. The book shows how the government has infiltrated almost every aspect of society. Teachers have to struggle between educating students and spying on them for the military. Monks worry that up to a tenth of all fellow monks may work for the military. During a referendum in 1973 to approve a new constitution, soldiers stood watch as voters put their votes in a "yes" or "no" box - the latter was discouraged. Overall, this book isn't like a human rights report, describing a few major outrages, but rather is more subtle. It details the many minor outrages that build up and eventually overwhelm daily life in the country. Unfortunately, the pessimism described in the book matches my observations while I've been in the country.

Definitely worth buying if you're interested in Burma at all. Despite being an academic work, this is an eminently readable account.

Note: This edition has been updated with an additional chapter to cover developments since 2001.

Scholarly and balanced book on Burma

This is the best book I've read on Burma in a long time and I've read a few. I've read a lot about ancient history but not too much about how life is under military rule. Being an outsider Christina Fink was able to have a more balanced view of what is happening. I have a much better understanding of what life is like there.
I had lived there in the early seventies but had very little interaction with Burmans. I wondered why then and I've wondered why since. Fink explained it so I understood.
I appreciated the Author's note on Burmese prefixes and Acronyms. I would have been lost without it. Lastly, the notes, bibliography and index were also helpful. It's good to find a scholarly text that makes clear and understandable reading. This is a good book, well worth reading.

About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is currently chair of the department of chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his B.A degree in chemistry from Westmont College and earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.  Honored as Westmont’s outstanding teacher of the year in 1994, 2001, and 2008, he was also named the college’s outstanding researcher of the year in 1996. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Alicia, Kyle, and Kaden. For leisure, he enjoys reading, writing, snowboarding, biking, and other outdoor activities with his family.

Perfect book for beginners in chem

Perfect book for beginners in chem. special features of the book eg skill builder boxes pose questions relating to the material in the chapter. These help in acquiring the necessary knowledge and helps understand the topic better. At the end of each chapter there is a summary of the concepts learnt, and many question types that ensure the necessary knowledge has been acquired. The language of the book is Easy to understand. Many illustrations are in picture form to help with visualization of what happens. The book also has a website where online one on one tutorials can be used to ask any doubts. This books is perfect because every other book will just introduce to the main topics but this book has every topic in chemistry introduced. This way the student gets to know which area of chemistry he/she is most likely interested in.

Definitely worth buying if you are looking for a book which covers everything you want in a clear understandable way.

PS I never took a chem course in high school. Right now I'm in uni and i'm majoring in mechanical engineering. I have chem course which is general chem. But because I had no prior knowledge of chem I bought this book to help me out get introed to all areas of chem and especially those I will need. So in the summer i went through the whole book solving every exercise that is in it. Now i find chem interesting (ty Nivaldo) !!

Sorry for such a long review but when it is about a perfect book, length shouldn't matter ;)

Ripped off again, do not buy Kindle versions.

*sigh* Bought the rental version of this book on Amazon, because it was the same as the hardcover and thus not as heavy. Of course it does not include the all important access code which you need to pass any college class these days. So as a result I have just tossed another $80 down the proverbial drain.

Michael: But since you bought the kindle edition I do believe that it only comes with the book version for the kindle

As always, buyer beware, DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK. YOU WILL BE SCREWED.

About the Author
Dr. Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Gitman is a prolific author who has more than 50 articles appearing in Financial Management, the Financial Review, the Journal of Financial Planning, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Financial Services Review, the Journal of Financial Research, Financial Practice and Education, the Journal of Financial Education, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. Authors Gitman and Joehnk's INVESTMENT FUNDAMENTALS: A GUIDE TO BECOMING A KNOWLEDGEABLE INVESTOR was selected as one of 1988's ten best personal finance books by Money magazine. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as Vice President--Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Carl McDaniel is professor emeritus in service at the University of Texas-Arlington. He currently holds courses for the executive MBA program on the Fort Worth campus and in China. He was the chairman of the marketing department at UTA for 32 years. McDaniel's career spanned more than 40 years, during which he was the recipient of several awards for outstanding teaching. McDaniel has also been a district sales manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and served as a board member of the North Texas Higher Education Authority, a billion-dollar financial institution. In addition to MKTG, McDaniel has written and co-authored over 50 textbooks in marketing and business. McDaniel's research has appeared in such publications as the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and California Management Review. McDaniel is a member of the American Marketing Association. In addition to his academic experience, McDaniel has business experience as the co-owner of a marketing research firm. McDaniel has also served as senior consultant to the International Trade Centre (ITC), Geneva, Switzerland. The ITC's mission is to help developing nations increase their exports. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and his master's degree and doctorate from Arizona State University.

FACTS, FACTS, WATSON, I CAN DISCOVER THEM, BUT NOT CHANGE THEM!

Well, actually, as any reader of Sherlock Holmes will know Holmes did not say it exactly like that when talking of discovery and facts. But what the reader will discover between these pages is the fact of 22 stories from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Stories which the reader will no doubt want to read and read again many times over.

This is the 3rd print of this mass market from Signet Classics, with the book being printed in 1985, 1987, and again with this 2005 edition. Since 1887 with A Study in Scarlet the novels and short stories of A. Conan Doyle have never been hard to find. If somehow you have never read any of the Sherlock Holmes material what a treat is awaiting you! Next to Shakespeare, Holmes may be the most sought after reading material to ever issue forth from Britain.

Some of my favorites are included here: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Empty House, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, and The Six Napoleons. Many may read Dickens' Chistmas Carol but for me hardly a Christmas passes without my either reading The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle or watching the DVD, and yes most of these stories are available on DVD from the earlier PBS/BBC productions of the 1980s.

"Indisputably the greatest fictional detective of all time".

Real good reading.

This book is good with select mysteries about the great case-solver of all times. When you read any Holmes case, you must keep in mind that these were the times when technoloy was so much behind what it is now; there was no way to even type fingerprints... only Holmes and his arch rival knew the art! This makes for good reading when you want to a refreshing break. Young kids can also follow the language, in fact I bought this one for my niece but ended up reading it myself... took me back a good 15 years. There's nothing like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle when it comes to Sherlock Holmes. A good buy, worth every cent it costs.

Too Little Holmes

Maybe it was just the issue I bought, but, as a Sherlock fan of longstanding I was mildly disappointed. I have the Canon on my bookshelves. I re-read periodically. As the years pass my frequency increases. Memory is the second thing to go. I can't remember the first!
I was looking for quality pastiches. What I got in this issue was mainly non-Holmes stories of detection supposedly in the Holmes style. Maybe.
Yes there were a couple of Holmesian stories, but why do Holmes fans need copies of stories from the Canon?
True Holmesians have them ALL handy on their shelves.

About the Author
Richard Arum has recently served as Professor of Sociology and Education at New York University; Program Director of Education Research at the Social Science Research Council; and Senior Fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A special memoir of a beautiful, talented journalist.

I loved this book! Megyn recalls the ups and downs in life (with understanding that we ALL have them) and reveals her path toward moving forward with humor, honesty, desire and love. It was an easy read as it's candid and self-deprecating. You sense her strengths and weeknesses throughout the book and her fairness shines through. I highly recommend Settle for More!

As a fan I ended up questioning her intentions for writing this book.

I'm a fan of Megyn Kelly but I have to say that this book is not worth your time or money. I thought I would end up liking her more after reading this, but I ended up questioning whether her intentions for writing this were merely for personal gain. Some of her allegations were too far fetched and did not sound authentic, especially because she waited to reveal these situations until her book debut. If you watch the Kelly File, you know that Megyn isn't afraid to ask the tough questions and to challenge others, so I would expect her to blow the whistle on these incidents early on if they were true. Wish I could have rated this higher, but I really expected more.

Not worth the $

Looked forward to reading about a lady who stood up to Trump, but her story lacks depth, centers on a generic theme for reaching high, mostly self congratulating, and not worth the $.
