Eye Tracking: A comprehensive guide to methods and measures, by Kenneth Holmqvist, Marcus Nystrom, Richard Andersson, Richard Dewhurst, Ha

We make 3-5 eye movements per second, and these movements are crucial in helping us deal with the vast amounts of information we encounter in our everyday lives. In recent years, thanks to the development of eye tracking technology, there has been a growing interest in monitoring and measuring these movements, with a view to understanding how we attend to and process the visual information we encounter.

Eye tracking as a research tool is now more accessible than ever, and is growing in popularity amongst researchers from a whole host of different disciplines. Usability analysts, sports scientists, cognitive psychologists, reading researchers, psycholinguists, neurophysiologists, electrical engineers, and others, all have a vested interest in eye tracking for different reasons. The ability to record eye-movements has helped advance our science and led to technological innovations. However, the growth of eye tracking in recent years has also presented a variety of challenges - in particular the issue of how to design an eye-tracking experiment, and how to analyse the data.

This book is a much needed comprehensive handbook of eye tracking methodology. It describes how to evaluate and acquire an eye-tracker, how to plan and design an eye tracking study, and how to record and analyse eye-movement data. Besides technical details and theory, the heart of this book revolves around practicality - how raw data samples are converted into fixations and saccades using event detection algorithms, how the different representations of eye movement data are calculated using AOIs, heat maps and scanpaths, and how all the measures of eye movements relate to these processes.

Part I presents the technology and skills needed to perform high-quality research with eye-trackers.
Part II covers the predominant methods applied to the data which eye-trackers record. These include the parsing of raw sample data into oculomotor events, and how to calculate other representations of eye movements such as heat maps and transition matrices.

Part III gives a comprehensive outline of the measures which can be calculated using the events and representations described in Part II. This is a taxonomy of the measures available to eye-tracking researchers, sorted by type of movement of the eyes and type of analysis.

For anyone in the sciences considering conducting research involving eye-tracking, this book will be an essential reference work.

Review

"This practical book discusses both theoretical concepts and experimental design,
showing how data samples can be converted into meaningful representations (i.e.
fixations and saccades) using various algorithms. This is a reference that
should be in the library of researchers in this field." -- DOODY'S

Kenneth Holmqvist is an associate professor in Cognitive Science at Lund university, where he founded the eye-tracking laboratory in 1995, which later grew into the large Humanities Laboratory. He has worked in a large variety of eye-tracking-based research stretching from reading research and scene perception, over to newspaper reading, advertisement studies and gesture recognition in face-to-face interaction. Kenneth also has expertise in eye tracking used in applied areas, including decision making in supermarkets and research on safety in car driving and air traffic control. In 2000, Kenneth initiated regular master courses in eye-tracking methodology. In 2006, he founded the Scandinavian Conference on Applied Eye-tracking, and in 2008, the international LETA training courses in eye-tracking methodology. Kenneth is the initiator and main author of this book.

Marcus Nystrom received his PhD in Information Theory from the department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, Sweden, in 2008, working with foveated video compression and scene perception. He currently works in the Humanities Laboratory at Lund University. His research interests span eye-tracking methodology in general and analysis of eye-tracking data in particular.

Richard Andersson is a PhD student in cognitive science and technician at the Lund University Humanities Laboratory. He teaches eye-tracking methodology and provides users with help during the formulation, building and analysis stage of the eye-tracking experiments.

Richard Dewhurst is presently a post-doctoral researcher at Lund University Humanities Laboratory, funded by the Swedish Research Council. He completed his PhD on training eye movements at the University of Nottingham in 2009, as part of the Cognition and Language research group. Prior to this he also obtained an MSc in psychological research methods from the University of Nottingham, and a BSc in psychology from the University of Wales, Bangor. His research focuses on attentional mechanisms and eye movements. More specifically how eye movement control changes with learning and experience, and how to devise and implement procedures for improving visual skills through training eye movements.

Fantastic in-depth overview
By gergelyrakoczi
This book is amazing, as it offers a fantastic overview to the eye tracking topic. It not only concentrates on hardware setups, analysis methods and parameter description but also summarizes all fundamental aspects of eye tracking research. In-depth investigations, an astonishing list of references as well as precise graphical illustrations make the book an essential tool for eye tracking researchers. A big THANK YOU for the authors. Well done, your work is a big help for my PhD study ...

Great book but it needs to expand the section on methods
By JM
I had the bought from two days, I read about two chapters before a colleague from overseas bought it from me (actually, he took it and paid me via Paypal). Now, I have to order the book again. The chapter on methodology is very good, it is worth the book. It fall short on the rest of the chapters, in particular when it comes to metrics. I would suggest for another edition, to expand the methodology part as it just one chapter.

If you are new to eye-tracking, this book might be for you, if you are looking for a comprehensive description on methods, this book is NOT for you.

The best eye tracking guide I have found
By Julia Wright
I highly recommend this book to anyone considering using eye tracking in their research. Not only does it address the theory behind eye-tracking measures, but the practical guide for selecting equipment, setting up the lab and experimental station are often overlooked aspects that leave novice researchers to rely on salesman advice (rather than understanding their true needs), or trying to conduct research in an inappropriate space that leaves their data rife with noise.

The American Slave Coast: A History of the Slave-Breeding Industry, by Ned Sublette, Constance Sublette

The American Slave Coast tells the horrific story of how the slavery business in the United States made the reproductive labor of "breeding women" essential to the expansion of the nation. The book shows how slaves' children, and their children's children, were human savings accounts that were the basis of money and credit. This was so deeply embedded in the economy of the slave states that it could only be decommissioned by Emancipation, achieved through the bloodiest war in the history of the United States. The American Slave Coast is an alternative history of the United States that presents the slavery business, as well as familiar historical figures and events, in a revealing new light.

Review
“A massive story of impressive research…” —Kirkus Reviews

“The Sublettes offer an economic history and theory of slavery that is blunt in its assessment, unassailable in its argument and accessible to a general reader.” —The Guardian

"Ned and Constance Sublette have provided the world with one of the best history books ever written about the United States. Nominally about the slave breeding industry in the US South, The American Slave Coast is actually a sweeping, in-depth survey of the nation known as the United States." —Counterpunch

“Planters said that slavery was a peculiar domestic institution, a way of life. Abolitionists answered that it was the ugliest of businesses. For too long historians tried to split the difference but really took a side by calling it ‘the South,’ a society or a culture. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, Ned and Constance Sublette get it right: it was an industry, a particular market-tested brand with varieties adapted to its changing times and places. And like all industries it had a politics, too, that affected producers, consumers, and the workers who, in this peculiar case, were not only labor but also capital and, in the bodies of their children, product. The three-hundred-year story has rarely, if ever, been told so fully or so well.” —David Waldstreicher, The Graduate Center, City University of New York, author of Slavery's Constitution: From Revolution to Ratification

“The American story cannot be told without a knowledge of its complete history. In The American Slave Coast, the Sublettes have painstakingly provided readers with both a compelling narrative and a well-documented and factual rendering. In addition, to its many other applications, The American Slave Coast will be extremely useful as an exemplar in the contemplated National Slavery Museum in Virginia.” —L. Douglas Wilder, Former Governor of Virginia and author of Son of Virginia: A Life in America's Political Arena

“It is not a quick read. But it is an excellent and important one, and should be first on the list of anyone wanting to better understand slavery and race issues in America.” —San Diego Book Review

“[T]his is a useful addition to the historiography of slavery.” —CHOICE

“Despite the length, the Sublettes have constructed a heart rending, compelling, brilliant, and highly readable book, one that is best read out loud. Indeed, if we fail to understand how black bodies mattered in the past, we will surely misunderstand the movement and meaning in the present.” —African American Intellectual History Society

A Must Read
By Amazon Customer
I had no idea how many people were involved in slavery, how totally dependent our economy was on slavery, how many Presidents owned slaves, how slaves were viewed as collateral, how slavery as an investment depended on slave breeding and an ever expanding market. I was familiar with the treatment of women, the breakup of families, and the view of non-whites as inferior. I didn't realize the extent of destroying Native Americans or using them to destroy each other. An excellent book.

Extremely well researched. It further plumbs the degradation and cruelty of slavery and helps to explain so many nuances of the Civil War. Black slaves built this country, but the attitudes still prevailing from the conditions and treatment the Sublettes have so clearly documented still haunts our country and denies them recognition. A must read for anyone striving for the betterment of society.

The grim details of a missing chapter in American history finally exposed
By Ken McCarthy
This book introduces to the general reader something that only serious historians of the slavery era grasp: Not only were terrorized human beings bought and sold as if tradable property, but enslaved women were often compelled to have children and those children, regardless of how they came into being, were very often taken away from their parents and sold as property too.

To steal people's life, liberty and labor is an abomination, but to take their children from them in a systematic, "business-like" way stretches the limits of inhumanity to nearly incomprehensible extremes. This book has come along at just the right time where there are still millions of Americans who simply don't "get" depth of the evil that this long chapter of American history represents.

Drawing: The Motive Force of Architecture, by Sir Peter Cook

Focusing on the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture, this book by one of its greatest proponents, Peter Cook, is an established classic. It exudes Cook's delight and catholic appetite for the architectural. Readers are provided with perceptive insights at every turn. The book features some of the greatest and most intriguing drawings by architects, ranging from Frank Lloyd Wright, Heath-Robinson, Le Corbusier, and Otto Wagner to Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Arata Isozaki, Eric Owen Moss, Bernard Tschumi, and Lebbeus Woods; as well as key works by Cook and other members of the original Archigram group.

For this new edition, Cook provides a substantial new chapter that charts the speed at which the trajectory of drawing is moving. It reflects the increasing sophistication of available software and also the ways in which 'hand drawing' and the 'digital' are being eclipsed by new hybrids—injecting a new momentum to drawing. These 'crossovers' provide a whole new territory as attempts are made to release drawing from the boundaries of a solitary moment, a single-viewing position, or a single referential language. Featuring the likes of Toyo Ito, Perry Culper, Izaskun Chinchilla, Kenny Tsui, Ali Rahim, John Berglund, and Lorene Faure, it leads to fascinating insights into the effect that medium has upon intention and definition of an idea or a place. Is a pencil drawing more attuned to a certain architecture than an ink drawing, or is a particular colour evocative of a certain atmosphere? In a world where a Mayer drawing is creatively contributing something different from a Rhino drawing, there is much to demand of future techniques.

A few decent pictures in a sea of babble
By R. Mutt
To start with, let me clarify that this is not a book about architectural drawing. It is a book about rendering ideas visually using every type of media you can imagine. So for every example of a drawing there are about ten examples of paintings, models, and an abundance of the typical modern 3D models gone horribly wrong. Add to this Cook's inability to clearly state any point, and you have a pretty bad example of an architectural drawing book.

Here's a quick example of the kind of twisted verbosity you'll have to wade through while reading this book:

"If it is the recurrent thesis of this book that drawing - of every kind - is a motor that absorbs imagination and converts it into usable or transferable information or inspiration, thus self-consciousness is but another form of evaluation."

Ignore the terrible structuring and obvious lack of logical thinking, and you get a statement about how drawing is a way to capture and transfer information. And this was one of Cook's attempts to clarify himself! You can only imagine how badly the rest of the book reads.

I found that Cook's attempt is just an exercise in pretentious slog of the type you'd hear spewing from some theorist's mouth at a black-tie exhibit. There are comparatively few visual examples given for the volume of text, and some examples are profoundly worthwhile (Arthur Beresford Pite, Neil Denari, Hans Poelzig) while the vast majority simply are not.

This is my second attempt at reading an Architectural Design (AD) series book and trying to make sense of it or find anything useful to take away from it. Both attempts have been failures. I have a third one coming, and I'm now starting to really worry about it.

Recommended substitutes:

Visual Notes for Architects and Designers by Norman Crowe and Paul Laseau
Architects' Sketchbooks by Will Jones and Narinder Sagoo

The first book is an excellent primer on the reasoning and methods behind visually rendering ideas and observations. The second book is a compendium of architectural renderings, mostly in crude form, showing the formation of ideas without letting the book's text get in the way. Go forth, learn, and be inspired. And if you want vacuous babble then there's plenty of that online, so there's no need to buy this book.

Author's Writing Style Poses Challenges
By V. Hutson
I was intrigued with the idea behind this book--"the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture." Unfortunately, I found the text extremely difficult to understand without reading every sentence a couple of times! This was truly disappointing. I finally just gave up and glanced through the images which really wasn't that useful since they don't mean as much when it is so difficult to understand the accompanying text.

I do think there is a small select group of people who may enjoy and benefit from this book. I'm just not in that group.

Good pictures - but text is a doublethink nightmare.
By E. Talerico
Although this book includes some interesting drawings, the text is a convoluted, un-inspiring doublethink nightmare. I found a few of the drawings to be very interesting, but when I looked into the text to see why the author included them, there was nothing of interest. Check it out in a library before adding this one to your own.

Disappointed
By Tracie Jenison
Little disappointed, I agree with the other review, it's really just the co-author's marketing tool, not a real Michael Gerber E-Myth book, not much of info on RE. Get the original E-Myth book then other better RE books. Don't waste your money on this one.

Take your real estate investing business to the NEXT LEVEL
By Jake Harris
I have been a real estate investor for 12 years now. I have purchased over 200+ properties and this book was a breathe of fresh air. I highly recommend this book and in fact am working on getting my whole team a copy. The key to the E-myth and especially the E-myth RE investor is about establishing systems. With systems in place, you can measure and track performance, and it is not just how many hours you can work in a day, week, month or year. Systems allow you to leverage your mental brainpower and turn the daily grind of chasing deal after deal into a predicable and reliable business that is not solely dependent on you as the owner. Michael, Than and Paul do an excellent job of helping guide you on that process through this book.

... at least some real information for a new investor like me. I feel like all they do on ...
By PLK
I was expecting so much more or at least some real information for a new investor like me. I feel like all they do on this book is just give you part of the tools and half of the information, so you can go ahead and get the full information when you buy their course. This book is just a marketing tool for them to get more students to their expensive courses. Not cool
