Cute book!
By Sara
I purchased this for my son's fourth birthday and he loves reading it. Puppy Birthday to You is a Little Golden Book about the Paw Patrol team planning a surprise birthday party for Chase. The power goes out while they are trying to bake a cake and the pups go out to fix the problem. They discover that the windmill is broken so Marshall, Rocky, and Ryder set about fixing it so that it can spin and produce electricity. Chase directs traffic while the power is out and Skye, Zuma, Rubble, and Katie set up Chase's surprise party. The Paw Patrol saves the day by getting the power back on and still manage to surprise Chase for his birthday. My son enjoys showing us pictures in the book and telling us about his favorite characters and the things that they do. I love it when a book can get my little ones excited about reading!

Paw Patrol! Puppy Birthday to You; another classic Golden Book Adaptation
By outwest
I bought this for my 4 yr old son who has been watching Paw Patrol for quite awhile and is a huge fan. Like with any Golden Book adaptation, the story is well done but simple enough for short attention spans, is well illustrated, and really makes the Paw Patrol characters shine. The story length is just right with nice vivid color illustration with the classic gold "Little Golden Books" binding.

Another great hit in the Golden Book lineup of Paw Patrol books, and one that little ones will love to read over and over (which is already happening here!) Go Paw Patrol!

Must have book for my little Paw Patrol fan's 3rd Birthday!
By KT
Puppy Birthday to You is such a cute story! This was a must have for my son’s Paw Patrol themed Birthday! He just turned 3 and is CRAZY about Paw Patrol! He wants to read this story every night. On the back of the book there are other Paw Patrol stories that he points to and says “we need to get these stories too!”

The quality of the book is just like any other Little Golden book! Well binded, cardboard cover with paper pages. At 3 years old, my son still tears things up when left in his bedroom unsupervised. For that reason we keep this book where he can’t get to it. As long as we continue to do so, I expect this book to last many years!

The Essential Adam Smith, by Adam Smith

Few writings are more often cited as a cornerstone of modern economic thought than those of Adam Smith. Few are less read.

The sheer strength of his great work, The Wealth of Nations, discourages many from attempting to explore its rich and lucid arguments. In this brilliantly crafted volume, one of the most eminent economists of our day provides a generous selection from the entire body of Smith's work, ranging from his fascinating psychological observations on human nature to his famous treatise on what Smith called a "society of natural liberty," The Wealth of Nations.

Among the works represented in this volume in addition to The Wealth of Nations are The History of Astronomy,Lectures on Jurisprudence, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and Smith's correspondence with David Hume.

Before each of Smith's writings Robert Heilbroner presents a clear and lively discussion that will interest the scholar as much as it will clarify the work for the non-specialist. Adam Smith emerges from this collection of his writings, as he does from his portrait in Professor Heilbroner's well-known book, as the first economist to deserve the title of "worldly philosopher."

From Publishers Weekly
Founding father of economic conservatism, Smith nevertheless sympathized with the working class and scorned landlords and other capitalists whom he deemed incapable of heeding public regulations. Today his books are frequently quoted yet seldom read. To remedy this situation, Heilbroner (The Worldly Philosophers has done an admirable job of abridging The Wealth of Nations and Smith's other major writings. Current debate has centered on Smith's theory of the "Invisible Hand," the self-regulating mechanism of a free-market economy, which has proved increasingly irrelevant in the face of structural unemployment and large-scale industry. But Heilbroner points out that the Invisible Hand, far more than a ghostly economic planner, was meant to provide the underpinnings for a workable system of social and moral order. Heilbroner emphasizes that Smith was far less optimistic than many people assume; though he considered capitalism the basis for personal freedom, he expected that both the propertied class and the workers would push for their narrow self-interests. The skillfully edited selections cut through Smith's cant and rhetoric.

A Great Introduction to Adam Smith's Ideas
By Bryan Lukasaweicz
After reading Heilbroner's The Worldly Philosophers, I decided to read Smith's Wealth of Nations, but found myself daunted by the length and language of the book. Then I discovered Heilbroner's Essential Adam Smith and was hooked. The book offers the essential parts of Wealth of Nations, as well as a good sampling of some of his other works. As a result, I have not only read the entire Wealth several times, but have also read everything by and about Smith that I can find. Heilbroner's book is a good way to get to the heart of Smith's thinking, but, like me, you will probably find yourself wanting to learn more about the man, his ideas, and his life. Enjoy!

Condensed Capitalism
By ray
To understand capitalism, read the Wealth of Nations. But, to really understand it, as well as the other ideas of Adam Smith, read his essential works. This book allows the reader to fully grasp the concepts of capitalism and get a clear picture of how and why it works. Thankfully, Heilbronner did not dilute the works of Smith, he just condensed them for the modern day reader. With this book you can cut through the jargon and see the real points that Smith was trying to get across.

A good, concise summary of Smith
By Will Jerom
Content Summary: Adam Smith wrote two major works in his life - "The Theory of Moral Sentiments", which is lesser known, and his master work "The Wealth of Nations." Smith is remembered as one of the founding fathers of classical economic theory, known to us today as free market capitalism. In this concise summary, Heilbroner successfully gives us the essence of Smith's moral and economic theory Smith accomplished in both books.

Analytical Review: Heilbroner says that many people quote Adam Smith for their ideas, without actually having read Smith. This short work should help correct that, and I would recommend it (especially for the second half on The Wealth of Nations) as a concise introduction to Smith's thought. Both books would be over three times the length of this volume, so Heilbroner has slimmed the work down considerably, without sacrificing too much of its important meaning. Reading Smith, one is surprised how much his labor theory of value initially correspond to that of Marx, but Smith is much more comfortable with the use of money, and shifts away from the labor theory to market and exchange as the center of value. Like Marx's Capital, there may be parts to agree with, parts to dissent from here. Smith clearly would not give "carte blanche" to the capitalist, as many later thinkers would maintain. In fact Smith quite succinctly says that we should very skeptical of any legislation that is heavily sponsored by the commercial sector, as their interests are often contrary to the public interest. While Smith champions the free market, he has also some consideration for the poor. What he lacks, however, is the crystal clear solidarity with the working poor that is demonstrated in Marx's Capital. Smith's theory makes it seem as if capitalism results in a tide of wealth where all boats rise. This indeed may be true, but it also results in very gross and considerable inequalities. If people would read both works before they may hasty judgments about capitalism or socialism, it would certainly be beneficial.

Great Tool For The Adult Job Seeker
By Ro
I'm 45 and feel very young but I'm also realistic. I was pretty rusty at interviewing. I read this book, skimmed through some sections that were not applicable to my situation but delved deeply into those that were or close to it. Let me tell you, I developed answers to some questions and rehearsed in the mirror using my phone to watch myself. IT WORKED!! I went in feeling enthusiastic and confident (actually telling myself that over and over). The position was for a promotion in my office and was a panel interview with managers who I knew a little but had never worked with. Don't get me wrong, I know my job, I help my current lead alot so I went in having done my homework and feeling prepared. The interview went well but I was still nervous. I WAS PROMOTED!! MORE MONEY, MORE RESPONSIBILITY. My feedback was that my interview topped all the others. The Director later asked me if was given the questions in advance???!!!! I give myself the credit but this book really helped. At least two (maybe 3 I can't remember) the questions asked during the interview were variations of questions which I had already prepared for and rehearsed right out of this book! I recommend this book wholeheartedly. Buy the book. Go get that job!

I strongly recommend this book, especially on CD
By A dad
This is one of the best interviewing books, and I've read many. I'm not saying this is the only book you'll want, whether you're the interviewee or the interviewer. However, if you're going to get just two books, I'd make this one of the two.

In a nutshell, this book tells us that interviewers are bored during interviews. In my words, not the Robin Ryan's, the point of this book is that when you're interviewing for a position, you should be a human commercial. The author explains in detail how to create this short commercial, and then you've got to stick to it.

This is not much different than election candidates staying on message no matter what questions they're asked. The candidate has a very saleable message memorized and then repeats it a lot. Ryan advises developing 5 selling points for your interview. By sticking to the script, it's likely that the interviewer will remember the saleable message.

What I like most of the author's approach is that it provides a methodology for handling lots of weird questions that are asked during an interview. For example, "Tell me about yourself, Citizen John." This is a question just to get the interviewee talking. Instead of rambling about irrelevant things, the proper response according to Ryan is to launch into the preprepared 5 selling points. It's as if the question was really, "Can you tell me again your 5 selling points?"

I recommend this book. The method provided seems sound. It works for election candidates. It can minimally be used whenever there is uncertainty over how to respond to just about anything in an interview. I prefer the CD version because this is the kind of book I want to listen to several times, and it's well-narrated.

As his health fades, he embarks with his friend Ari on a madcap search for legendary cricket bowler Pradeep Mathew. From Booklist
*Starred Review* For American readers clueless about cricket—and we are everywhere—this first novel might be tough going, despite having won the 2008 Gratiaen Prize, a literary award established by novelist Michael Ondaatje for the best English-language writing by a resident Sri Lankan, and despite Karunatilaka’s noble efforts to explain the game to the uninformed. Thankfully, we are guided through the novel by charming, aging, alcoholic sportswriter-bounder W. G. (Wije) Karunasena and his trusted friend Ari Byrd—both equally passionate and opinionated about cricket—as they seek out the elusive (and fictional) Tamil bowler Pradeep Mathew, whose patchy but brilliant career included Sri Lanka’s inspired (and real-life) World Cup championship in 1996. Arguing and deconstructing cricket all the way, the pair leads us to, among other places, Colombo’s living rooms, bars, casinos, and cricket pitches—and their attendant characters—all played out amid the island’s heartrending, surreal, 26-year-long civil war. If Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost (2000) portrayed that war in darkly rendered overtones, Karunatilaka weaves it into the whole cloth of Colombo’s comically absurd daily life. Yet droll as his observations might be (“They say ambulances in Sri Lanka barely make it to the funeral”), Wije is clear-eyed about his own and his country’s failings and the terrors those failings have produced. More impressive, Wije, like many of his countrymen, carries a heroism he hardly knows he has. --Alan Moores

Review

“Karunatilaka offers the world a subversively funny, spot-on portrait of one tiny nation addressing its tragedy with humor, kindness and quiet, unwavering courage.” ―Seattle Times

“Shehan Karunatilaka's big-hearted, madcap novel reverberates with echoes of A Fan's Notes and Netherland.” ―Barnes and Noble Review

“Karunatilaka's rambunctious debut brims with inventive ideas and comic set-pieces. . . . Cricket aficionados will love The Legend of Pradeep Mathew, but Karunatilaka has stuffed his novel so full of life--albeit a crazily inflated version of it--for it to charm and dazzle the rest of us in equal measure.” ―Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

“Endearing . . . disguised as a sports story yet it's really about a man's love and disgust for his country.” ―Houston Chronicle

“In pursuing the true-or-false legend of a cricketer named Pradeep Mathew, Shehan Karunatilaka brings forth meditations on corruption, politics, terrorism, and colonialism as well as match-fixing and ball-tampering in cricket-obsessed Sri Lanka.” ―World Literature Today

"Sport can unite worlds, tear down walls and transcend race, the past and all probability. Unlike life, sport matters."
By Mary Whipple
This mind-boggling "quest novel" from Sri Lanka operates under its own rules, defies expectations, twists and turns on its own momentum, and ultimately resolves itself in ways the reader never predicts. Wijedasa Gamini Karunasena, known as Wije, the main character here, is a sportswriter who has covered cricket for years. Winner of Ceylon Sportswriter of the Year, 1969 and 1976, he has always believed Pradeep Mathew, a Tamil who was a star in only four games over his career, to be the best cricket player who ever lived, someone whose feats have been wiped out, somehow, in the records. Though hobbled by drink, and in poor health, Wije buddies up with his friend, Ariyatne Cletus Byrd, to produce a documentary about the best cricket players in Sri Lanka, with one whole episode devoted to Pradeep Mathew. As Wije does his research on Pradeep, however, every lead seems to end, every clue seems to disappear, and Pradeep seems to be on the receiving end of a plan to wipe him off the face of Sri Lankan cricket history. No one even knows if Pradeep is alive or dead.

Wije's own life also becomes more complicated as the novel progresses. His drinking becomes serious enough to threaten his life. His wife Sheila is frustrated by his alcoholism. His son Garfield is alienated, living outside Sri Lanka and marrying and divorcing more than once. His friend Jonny is arrested and thrown in jail, and Ari, his statistician, wearies of Wije's problems. All this time, Sri Lanka is fighting for its political life, with the Tamil Tigers fighting for total control of the north and east and the military trying to maintain control of the rest of the country. Bombings, assassinations, and terrorism accompany the daily news about the latest Sri Lanka cricket team losses and occasional victories, with the characters here more concerned with the cricket results. "Sport can unite worlds, tear down walls and transcend race, the past and all probability," Wije observes. "Unlike life, sport matters."

Hugely successful with UK readers, many of whom are passionate cricket fans, the novel may be challenging to US readers because of the unfamiliar cricket vocabulary. The book itself is ultimately not just about cricket, however, as much as it is about people who love cricket because it provides them with an exciting escape from the everyday humdrum and people who believe that cricket offers some structure in which the injustices of their lives can be seen playing out against the larger world. The Sri Lankan team rarely wins, but the passion with which the fans support it suggests that they find their losses attributable to "cosmic" forces beyond their control, such as corruption, game fixing, the interference of the government, and tampering with players, all of which appear in this novel. Racism and the stratification of Sri Lankan society also play a role here.

The novel, filled with wonderful dialogue and humor, portrays life in Sri Lanka in ways not seen before in literature. The line between what is true and what is fictional blurs as the novel develops, with the reader benefiting from the mystery and the uncertain chronological time line which keeps the suspense lively. A unique, enjoyable, and often wacky look at an unusual part of the world through a sport which few Americans understand. Mary Whipple

The Legend of Pradeep Mathew: A Novel
By Anurag Som
This is the best book I have read this year. It is the People Magazine meets International Cricket meets Oprah of books! Set in SriLanka, commenting on the Cricket scene in the 80s and 90s, this book to me was a bitter sweet reminder of the game I once loved and enjoyed through my own father's eyes. Having lived through the trauma of international cricket played in Sharjah, where India lost enough matches by fair or unfair means, I soon weaned off what should have been the national sport of India (as it probably should have been of Sri Lanka and the rest of the subcontinent). This book is like life- comic, tragic, mysterious and sensuous.

Some excerpts that stood out for me...

"Did the drinking make me a thinker or did the thinking make me drink?"
Having just lost a friend to alcohol, this book helped me deal with some of the many unknowns of the last days of what might have been my friend's experience dealing with the sickness that is alcoholism.

"In real life, justice is rarely poetic and too often invisible. Good sits in a corner, collects a check and pays a mortgage. Evil builds empires."
...so literally, though I never think in terms of good and evil, I completely get this.

"I didn't know I made you so unhappy, I didn't know you thought so little of our life. Did you really think I was complete;y pointless?....For what it's worth, I have memories I will not let you spoil."
...sometimes we never really know how others experience us, especially those closest to us.

"You saw me ask W.G. for money, though he does not mention how drunk he was or that he referred to me as a 'lazy useless f*****' and that is why I left the room."
...life is full of one sided tales, toxic moments, careless whispers and tough, misunderstood love.

It is cricket after all
By Hande Z
This novel, was previously reprinted as "Chinaman", is about an old sports writer, Wijedasa Gamini Karunasena (or "Wije" as his friends call him) and his search for a forgotten Sri Lankan cricket hero, Pradeep Sivanathan Mathew. The "Chinaman" is the description of a cricket bowling manoeuvre) When Wije was diagnosed with liver failure and given a poor diagnosis he decided to make a documentary film about Pradeep Mathew. Throughout the book, Wije would lament his giving up alcohol on account of his health ("After fifty years of distinguished liver abuse, I, W.G. Karunasena , gave up booze."). He continues to sing praises of drink and drinking - "Has alcohol brought misery to humanity or kept it at bay?"

The story is replete with cricket players, cricket matches, and cricket terminology but far from being intimidating to a non-cricket player, the author unfolds them all with clarity and panache. "The Duckworth-Lewis method of resolving rain-affected games has divided the cricketing fraternity into those who do not understand it and those who pretend they do." No wonder the philosopher C E M Joad described cricket as a game for two (batsman and bowler) played by 22 players.

Some of the jokes might not be original but they fit perfectly into the story in Karunatilaka's hands: "It begins with the alcohol counselor two days after I am discharged. Before we go, Sheila [Wije's wife] gives me an article from "The Lanka Woman" on "How to overcome a Drinking Problem". `I didn't know that Lankan women had drinking problems,' I snort. `They do. They're called husbands.' Unlike me Sheila doesn't laugh at her own jokes."

Karunatilaka inclines us to respect unsung heroes in sport, and sympathise with unfulfilled writers who pickle their livers with alcohol. He exposes the hypocrisy of the aristocratic class and shows us that the world is just like a zoo, where "the animals are as shabby as the people looking at them." The author is a spinner of a great tale in which he alludes to Sri Lanka's troubled history and the war with the Tamil Tigers, but his accounts of fights between cricketers are hilarious. The story begins with Wije's quixotic search for Pradeep Mathew, and if not for the snippets of information concerning his past, one might suspect that that man does not exist. By the end of the book, one might even wonder whether this was a story about Wije's documentary on Pradeep Mathew - or Pradeep Mathew's biography of Wijedasa the sports writer.

Review
4 solid stars By Debbie Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.
Grace is a strong character and has opinions on everything, not least for the better of her pack, her people. And I liked her! I did. She has some inner goddess that we all should have, only her goddess is a wolf.

Ive filed under paranormal as well as werewolves, as many other beings besides wolves appear. The usual riff-raff, vampires, pixies, dwarves, but also something not often seen, centaurs. And a centaur is the focus of book 2, and I do hope I get to read that too, as I think it may well be an amusing read.

From the Author
The Prequel, Pursuing Grace was published in the Paranormally Yours Anthology which reached the Best Seller's list. It has been released on it's own (after some professional editing) in March, 2015. The Prequel will be free to say "thank you" to my fans! It is taking some time for Amazon to make the book perma-free. Until they do, you can find the kindle file on the author's webpage.

Pursuing Grace will tell you how Grace came to Belfast. This is her introduction to Lycan society and her super sexy mate, Roman.

Overall Awesome read.

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

This is my first time reading anything by Ms Cox.

Starting this book I had a feeling that I was missing something! Yes there is a prequel! That being said I enjoyed everything about this book.
The storyline was unique and well written and I couldn't put it down. Yes it's a book that will give you a book hangover, but well worth it....

Ms Cox has created a world full of wild, wonderful and fantastic magical creatures ( Centaurs, Pixies and Vampires to name but a few) combined with a fantastic storyline full of adventure, suspense and surprising twists, and not forgetting humour and steaminess to make this book an overall awesome read!
I won't go into plot or spoilers I would just recommend you read it!!

During the course of this story I came to love many characters and I want to read more.
Looking forward to reading book #2.
Recommend to all fans of Paranormal and Erotic Fans...
Note this book is recommended for Mature readers due to Adult content!!

By MRS M D ATTENBOROUGH
Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.

Grace is a Lycan princess. But she didnt know this just a few short weeks ago. Now she has to deal with a possible mate, a frined going off to college and an obnoxious youngster. Also, the threat of being stolen and shipped to a puppy farm is high. Can Grace and Roman overcome all this, and fulfill a long held prophecy?

My first thought when I began reading this was "is there a book BEFORE this one that I should have read?" I looked and can't see one. I think there should be though, to deal with Grace finding out who she really is, or more importantly, WHAT she is. And dealing with her relationship beginnings with Roman.

A slightly different take on the wolf theme, it deals mostly with Grace learning about being a wolf, a Lycan Princess and next to the throne, and the inequality of werewolves as a pack. It deals with the old held views that women, females shifters, are nothing more than baby, pup making machines. And it deals with the aftermath of that.

Grace is a strong character and has opinions on everything, not least for the better of her pack, her people. And I liked her! I did. She has some inner goddess that we all should have, only her goddess is a wolf.

Ive filed under paranormal as well as werewolves, as many other beings besides wolves appear. The usual riff-raff, vampires, pixies, dwarves, but alos something not often seen, centaurs. And a centaur is the focus of book 2, and I do hope I get to read that too, as I think it may well be an amusing read.

4 solid stars, simply because I felt I needed that information from before.

A shifter book with a twist...
By Booklover4lifeblog
***I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review!***

Rating: 2.5 Stars

This was a very unusual shifter romance book. While most shifter books have a clear alpha male who runs the pack, this book took a bit of a detour from the norm. Rather than focus so much on the men and their roles within the pack, it focused more on strong women's roles and was nothing like you would expect to read.

This is the first book in the series, though there is a prequel which was released in an anthology prior to this book's release (though it has since been released on its own). This book focuses on the relationship between Roman and Grace, and the secrets that are uncovered about Grace's past and their race's history. Grace is unlike any other shifter because she has powers no one else has, due to her royal blood.

I did like that this book showed strong, powerful women who weren't afraid to take charge of their lives, and who weren't afraid to stand up for one another. It wasn't about the men in this story, it was all about the females. Each of the women in this book sought to expand people's minds when it came to the typical stereotypes that women are categorized into. There were no weak women in this book, and that was a nice change of pace.

I believe that this book should not be read without first reading the prequel. The story starts out rather abruptly, with knowledge that you are missing, due to it being in the prequel. The author tries to convey the information to the reader, but I was left a bit confused, and feel that my reading enjoyment would have been heightened if I had read the first book beforehand.

The relationship between Roman and Grace developed at a pretty good pace, considering I didn't have the background knowledge of what they had previously gone through. It wasn't something where they were experiencing insta-love, as is the case with many books, and although they were meant to be mates, it took some time for them to get to that place where it felt right for both of them. I definitely appreciated that approach.

While this book is a series, I really feel as though it would be better suited as a serial. Some of the book was rather drawn out, while some of it happened extremely quickly. There were some things that happened about halfway through the book that I felt should have ended the story, and the rest of the book should have been another book because it took the story in a completely new direction from what the synopsis led you to believe.

This book introduced a lot of characters, and there were many scenes that didn't involve the two main characters at all. I find that books of this nature can confuse the readers, as it almost seems unnecessary. I kind of feel like if there is enough information about a character that you need to write many scenes involving them and their story line, then maybe they should have their own novella. Otherwise I feel like it can take away from the main story.

This book is listed under the erotic PNR genre, but I don't really feel like there was a whole lot of love story in here. There was some suspense, but it kind of felt that the overall theme was about women's empowerment and overcoming gender stereotypes. There were a few sex scenes in this book, but unfortunately, I didn't find them to be very stimulating. There were also some really bizarre sex scenes that completely turned me off. When I received this book, I was told that it was a F/M book with a menage scene. I can handle menage reads, as there are some that I've read which are truly fantastic; however, this scene was extremely weird and it seemed completely unnecessary. There were also some F/F scenes which I do not enjoy, and there was no mention of that in the synopsis that I received.

While I feel like the author did some tremendous things in her writing in terms of women's rights and taking a different approach on a shifter book, I just was not able to get in to this book as I would have liked to. I was excited to receive this book, because it sounded really interesting, but it took a different turn that I just couldn't really enjoy. I was also told that this was the final, edited copy that was already published, yet there were a lot of editing issues in this book. Those issues also took away from my enjoyment. Some examples of the editing issues include spelling a character's name wrong, spelling/grammar issues (including switching tenses mid-sentence), formatting issues, use of words or phrases that don't actually exist, etc.

While I hate to write reviews for books that I don't really enjoy, for whatever reason, I feel that it is only fair to be critical in my review. My reviews are never meant to put down an author, simply to point out some issues that I feel need to be addressed in order to make for a better book and a more enjoyable read. As this is an established author, editing issues do take away from my overall rating and affect whether or not I feel I can recommend a book. As such, at this point in time, I cannot recommend this book.

Hamlet (Dover Thrift Editions), by William Shakespeare

In this quintessential Shakespeare tragedy, a young prince's halting pursuit of revenge for the murder of his father unfolds in a series of highly charged confrontations that have held audiences spellbound for nearly four centuries. Those fateful exchanges, and the anguished soliloquies that precede and follow them, probe depths of human feeling rarely sounded in any art.
The title role of Hamlet, perhaps the most demanding in all of Western drama, has provided generations of leading actors their greatest challenge. Yet all the roles in this towering drama are superbly delineated, and each of the key scenes offers actors a rare opportunity to create theatrical magic.
As if further evidence of Shakespeare's genius were needed, Hamlet is a unique pleasure to read as well as to see and hear performed. The full text of this extraordinary drama is reprinted here from an authoritative British edition complete with illuminating footnotes.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare
By Gilgamesh
I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage ...
By Andi
I am a high school teacher and this was the first "No Fear" play I've used for my English classes. Before this, I used the Folger editions. To be honest, I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage because they were no longer learning how to read Shakespearean language. While this does provide convenient translations--students start relying too heavily on them. In addition, the translations don't always translate every word/line; it's mostly a translation of the general meaning. Thus, again, students are not learning to really decipher the language. The Folger versions, on the other hand, give translations for specific words that students then have to plug in in order to understand the actual Shakespearean language. I'm switching back to Folgers next year. However, I'd still say that this would be fine as a companion piece for students to check their understanding, but I wouldn't use this as the only text.

Excellent critical text with helpful notes
By Holly E. Ordway
I've been teaching Hamlet using this text for about two years (four semesters) to college freshmen/sophomores in a general composition/literature class. The Ignatius edition is the best that I've used (and I've used several); I put it slightly ahead of the Folger edition. (The Folger edition does have the advantage that it includes plot summaries of scenes -- very helpful to beginning Shakespeare readers -- which the Ignatius lacks.)

The essays that are included are solid and insightful. They are particularly helpful in helping readers understand the Christian context of the play. Regardless of whether or not the reader is Christian, it's necessary to understand Christian ideas about sin, repentance, and justice in order to grasp the nuances of the play. When students are encouraged to really think deeply about these topics, they end up making connections between the events of the play and the events of their own lives -- for instance, about the struggle between desire ("I want what I want" -- just like Claudius) and reason ("I want to do what is right -- but how do I figure out what that is?" -- like Hamlet). This edition has been the most useful for me in terms of helping my students to do this kind of deep thinking.

On a practical level, I like the editor's choices about what words to gloss; to any adult reader who has read a lot of Shakespeare and other classic authors, the vocabulary glosses may seem like overkill, but it has been my experience that my 18-22-year-old students need and benefit from them.

It is helpful that the glosses are footnoted rather than end- or side-noted; this makes it easier to find them if you need them, while not being too intrusive if you don't. Visually, it's an attractive edition with plenty of white space -- important for taking marginal notes! - and the full names of characters spelled out.
