Die besonders heftige Verwendung dieses negativ attribuierten Begriffs, im Kontext der immer noch aktuellen Ereignisse am Golf, soll Anlass sein in dieser Arbeit zu klären, was Propaganda nun genau ist und wie sie auch heutzutage für Kriegszwecke benutzt wird.
Um dieses Phänomen beschreiben zu können, bedarf es zu erst einer theoretischen Annäherung, um die Grundlagen der Propaganda, ihre verschiedenen Mittel und ihre Ziele erfassen und verstehen zu können. Hierzu wird erst der Begriff der Propaganda allgemein und dann der Kriegspropaganda im speziellen erklärt. Dabei wird auch auf konflikttheoretische Grundlagen und auf die Bedeutung der Medien eingegangen, da diese für Konstruktion, Absicht und Wirkung von Kriegspropaganda von großer Bedeutung sind.
Auf der Grundlage dieses theoretischen Vorwissens soll Kriegspropaganda am aktuellen Beispiel des Irak-Krieges 2003 analysiert werden. Hierbei soll gezeigt werden, dass die US-Regierung Kriegspropaganda zur Unterstützung ihrer Kriegspläne angewendet hat.
