Once over lightly done in an entertaining style

Author Daniel Cohen used to pump out books like this fairly regularly in the 1970s. He would take a paranormal or occult subject and write an introductory book on the subject aimed mostly at readers who had only a casual interest in the subject and wanted to learn more. Most of his books were aimed at institutional sales, school libraries being a particular target. Thus it's sometimes not easy finding copies of his books without library fixtures.
Here, he takes on the subject of cryptozoology but restricts himself to the western hemisphere, primarily the US and Canada. He reviews the origins of various creatures in an engaging and friendly manner. He takes a middle of the road approach. He doesn't dismiss out of hand but doesn't accept uncritically either. It is easy to see that he's skeptical of most of the subjects discussed here but one gets the impression he's going out his way to give a fair hearing to all sides. He mostly succeeds.
There is no pretense on the author's part that he has done any original research on the subject; again this is just an overview for those casually interested. For those interested in following up there is a bibliography of more thorough works, both enthusiastic and skeptical.
Recommended for newcomers to the field although it is a little dated with a 1975 copyright date. Fans of Cohen won't be disappointed either.

Fun Book

Like the author of the previous post, I remember reading this book in 5th grade. It was in my elemenatary school library. It was a lot of fun and introduced me to a lot of the classics of fringe belief. The Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, etc., and an interesting chapter on the Cardiff Giant. That was back in 1975/76, as we were entering a golden age of popular paranormal belief, with "In Search of..." soon to be on tv, and all those bigfoot documentaries in the theaters.

For those of you that love cryptozoology-don't buy this book.This book is mainly for those that have a passing interest in this type of subject.The entire book is written from a skeptics point of view as well.Book is fine for kids but if you're into Heuvelmans,Sanderson,Coleman,etc.-prepare to disappoint yourself.
