This is the story of two young people from completely different worlds: Kennedy Odede from Kibera, the largest slum in Africa, and Jessica Posner from Denver, Colorado. Kennedy foraged for food, lived on the street, and taught himself to read with old newspapers. When an American volunteer gave him the work of Mandela, Garvey, and King, teenaged Kennedy decided he was going to change his life and his community. He bought a soccer ball and started a youth empowerment group he called Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). Then in 2007, Wesleyan undergraduate Jessica Posner spent a semester abroad in Kenya working with SHOFCO. Breaking all convention, she decided to live in Kibera with Kennedy, and they fell in love.Their connection persisted, and Jessica helped Kennedy to escape political violence and fulfill his lifelong dream of an education, at Wesleyan University.
The alchemy of their remarkable union has drawn the support of community members and celebrities alike—The Clintons, Mia Farrow, and Nicholas Kristof are among their fans—and their work has changed the lives of many of Kibera’s most vulnerable population: its girls. Jess and Kennedy founded Kibera’s first tuition-free school for girls, a large, bright blue building, which stands as a bastion of hope in what once felt like a hopeless place. But Jessica and Kennedy are just getting started—they have expanded their model to connect essential services like health care, clean water, and economic empowerment programs. The inspiring true story of how one couple’s love changed a community
Growing up homeless in Kibera, a slum in Kenya, Kennedy Odede received a book of Martin Luther King’s speeches that changed his life and inspired him to start Shining Hope for Communities, a local youth group. Several years later, irrepressible Wesleyan student Jessica Posner traveled to Kenya to work with SHOFCO. Soon, she and Kennedy fell in love. After returning to Wesleyan, Jessica discovered that Kennedy was threatened by political violence. She helped him escape by convincing Wesleyan’s admissions committee to offer him a full scholarship.
Once they’d finished college, Kennedy and Jessica returned to Kibera to found a school for hundreds of its most vulnerable residents: girls. They later opened a sister school in another slum, Mathare. With help from the community and donors around the world, they also provide water, health care, and entrepreneurial programs to tens of thousands in both places, and are determined to improve the lives of countless more.

About the Author
Kennedy Odede is one of Africa's best-known community organizers and social entrepreneurs. Kennedy is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, and a trustee of Wesleyan University.
Jessica Posner is the cofounder of Shining Hope for Communities. She is a nationally recognized social entrepreneur and activist. She won the 2010 Do Something Award and was named "America's top world-changer 25 and under" live on VH1. Jessica has been recognized as one of Wesleyan University's Distinguished Alumni, and has received the prestigious Echoing Green Fellowship.

This story needs to be heard

This story needs to be heard. I closed the book cover left with an unrelenting desire to share this story with strangers and loved ones. Jess and Kennedy are two inspirations from different worlds and for totally different reasons. Jess left the comfort of her home in the US to live in the Kenya slums, fueled by a desire to do more in the world. While she is beyond bold, she is relate-able. Kennedy fought through hardship most of the readers on here will never endure, and became a role model in a community who needed one the most. This story teaches you about love (in a hopeless place), hardship, perseverance, and that anything is possible with mental strength. I recommend this for anyone looking or struggling to follow their dreams - big dreams.

Incredible story of two wonderful people from different worlds.

This book is a must-read. I have seldom (if ever) read a book that brought me to tears every few chapters. Kennedy's incredibly difficult life is a story in and of itself, but his ability to have hope in spite of all of the difficulties he faced is inspiring and uplifting. The flow of the book is marvelous as Kennedy and Jessica's stories are intertwined to come together into their wonderful dream. Facing a life of abject poverty in one of the largest slums in Kenya, Kennedy found faith in others that their lives could be changed. And when Jessica was added to the formula after a college semester abroad, they became the fantastic team that continues to move this wonderful organization forward. Block out some time to read this book, as it is very difficult to put down, as you wonder what else could happen to these two. Very well written. A delightful story in so many ways. Please read it!!

A Shining Beacon Of Hope in the Worst Possible Circumstances

I was so pleased to finally allow myself the time to read and digest the remarkable story of Jessica Posner and Kennedy Odede. Their love story crosses the barriers people often put between themselves, and in that sense it's a miracle but the REAL miracle lies in how Kennedy overcame abominable life circumstances and used his experience to set up SHOFCO. Shining Hope For Communities does incredible work providing necessary social services such as empowerment training and health care to thousands of slum dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya. The Kibera School For Girls shines as a beacon of hope, drawing out the potential of young girls to change their life circumstances as well as to educate the surrounding community on the value of educating girls. May the world's 130,000,000 girls still NOT in school today find the good fortune of receiving such a quality education in such a supportive environment. Bravo, SHOFCO!
