Sharon Erickson Nepstad is Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico. She is the author of numerous articles and three books, including: Nonviolent Revolutions: Civil Resistance in the Late 20th Century (2011, Oxford University Press); Religion and War Resistance in the Plowshares Movement (2008, Cambridge University Press); and Convictions of the Soul: Religion, Culture, and Agency in the Central American Solidarity Movement (2004, Oxford University Press).

He has published widely on the theory and philosophy of education. With Paradigm Publishers he published Beyond Learning: Democratic Education for a Human Future (2006) – winner of the 2008 American Educational Studies Association Critics' Choice Book Award – and Good Education in an Age of Measurement: Ethics, Politics, Democracy (2010). Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, USA and Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow in Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has conducted various research projects awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Veterans Administration and the pharmaceutical industry. Author of more than 350 articles and chapters, Dr Stahl is the author of the bestsellers Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology and The Prescriber's Guide.

The Exact Improvements I Had Anticipated from the Previous Edition

When I had first read Dr. Stahl's Essential Pharmacology (3rd Ed.), I was absolutely fascinated with the presentation and wished that psychopharmacology was taught this way in medical school.

This latest edition does not disappoint either.

When the book arrived in the mail I was quite curious why the packaging for it was not as thick as I expected (readers of Stahl know how thick the previous edition was). That's because the book has been reformatted into a larger page size and some redundancy in the chapters was eliminated. I have to say I really like the new format; it's not quite a full sized textbook and in my opinion is perfect because neither textbook nor smaller-sized (yet Bible thickness) lend themselves to ease of transport.

As far as the actual content goes, readers will find that the book is very similar yet significantly updated as to not feel like one is reviewing the same book as the previous edition. I have only thus far given the book a cursory overview, but the ambiguities I noticed in the previous edition have been seemingly cleared up. Another fantastic aspect of the new edition is a more in depth analysis of specific receptor subtypes.

Dr. Stahl continues to show his great insight in biological psychiatry, and I highly rate his series!

Stahl is a mainstay for teaching psychopharmacology

this is far and away the most effective text for teaching students about psychopharmacology. it is clearly written for the educated "naive" in a graduate program, i.e., those students familiar with brain functions to a certain extent and needing to drill down more deeply to understand medications, pharmacy, and behavior connections.

Great resource

While Essential Psychopharmacology does not exactly make the topic easy, it is the most straightforward, understandable and useful book I have found. The book is well ordered and is written clearly. The schematic drawings have helped me make sense out of subject matter that is often delineated in multisyllabic science-speak.

A must for any singer

This book is packed with info, tips, wisdom and exercises. She's covered it all! Also very cool that there are links to a special YouTube channel that gives visual/audio examples of much of what she explains so you can see things in action. This alone really brings so many points to life. But, the amount of things that go into achieving a powerful performance is surprising and she helps you explore and improve each aspect. Brilliant!
