Ottolenghi scores big with "Ottolenghi"

My admiration for this author/chef knows no limits. Really. I've been cooking out of Ottolenghi's "Plenty" cookbook for the past year or so at least twice a week and it's changed the family's eating habits and appreciation of good taste astronomically. So when this newly published cookbook (from the restaurant menu) was published in the U.S., I was interested. At the same time, I wondered how the newbie could improve and/or expand on the author's two previous (and terrific) books. I shouldn't have been the least bit skeptical. "Ottolenghi" is even better than its predecessors and chock-a-block full of great new food.

I come to this opinion from the perspective of someone who cooks almost exclusively vegetarian dishes. "Ottolenghi" is about two-thirds non-meat in content. Lots of terrific new vegetable entrees and sides, with the usual emphasis on freshness, herbs, nuts and Middle East/Mediterranean spices. What's really new in the author's approach in this cookbook is a generous section on desserts (most of them adaptations of classics) and many recipes for sauces that can be used with a lot of different entrees or as dips, spreads, etc.

I'm just getting started in using this new book--and in fact started with dessert! How does chocolate chestnut bar sound? A kind of exotic brownie, but richer and creamier than the traditional approach. Killer taste. The same chapter includes a fine recipe for a more traditional brownie, but clearly better, judging from the ingredients.

I'm a total fan of this guy and his books and have been giving them as gifts for the past year. I even gave one to a Moroccan friend who is a wonderful cook, but who became an instant admirer and regular user of Ottolengthi's "Plenty". So get the new one or at least one of the earlier books--it/they will change your life.

Amazing

I have so many cookbooks some might see it as ridiculous I buy yet another...but this one is really quite special. This book is very inspiring. Nice pictures, they really bring the dishes to life. However, it's the inventive, thoughtful combination of ingredients that just blow me away. Seriously, I just look at the picture of the green bean and pea dish and 20 other variations pop in my head. I am not a recipe follower too often, mostly I just read and then start chopping whatever is in the kitchen. I heartily recommend it even though I have barely read through 15 pages. The authors are VERY specific in their cooking directions in a really good way. They also like their veggies a bit on the crunchy side for our family's taste, but that is simple to change. I wish it was in paperback so it was easier to read in bed.

Great recipes, could have been more user friendly.

I am a fan of Ottolenghi recipes. I follow their Guardian column 'The New Vegetarian'. I find their recipes fresh, modern, bright and fun. So far I have tried couple of eggplant recipes, pistachio cookies and baked okra. All came out great. Their recipes in Guardian-online are fun as well.
Having said that, I wish they had serving suggestions in this book for recipes. It would also help to have some sample menus, specially for someone new to Mediterranean cooking.
I live in US and as such the book is cumbersome to use because of metric system used throughout. I don't mind that much, but it would have been nice to include a conversion table somewhere. Hopefully, there will be a US edition soon, but I could not wait for it to come out.
The book is beautifully laid out and the pictures are very tempting.
Overall, I like the book a lot.

Not so basic but a GREAT value anyway

In preparation to write a more comprehensive review of this text for my site, I came to Amazon to see what others had said -but alas, no one had. How odd.

Context: I've been making patterns in the industry for nearly 3 decades, I'm also an author, run the most popular site on the internet for people who want to start a clothing line and do a lot of training in production pattern making. Because I collect pattern making books, I had to get this one. To be sure, I was put off by the low price (I admit to equating value with price) but figured $10 wasn't much of a risk with free shipping.

I have to tell you, this is not a bad buy, why are people selling used copies? I should qualify that. You should not expect to be able to cut whatever style strikes your fancy after using this book, it will not do that. I also wouldn't describe it as "Basic". Some of the styles within are quite complex and would be challenging for beginners but fun for intermediate pattern makers or those with a knack for it willing to exercise a bit of perseverance.

The value for beginners is drafting a fitting shell. For kindred with more experience, it has the *only* instruction I've seen in *modern* books on how to draft a sleeve appropriate to the range of motion. Most pattern books show the front and back of the sleeve as being close to mirror images. This one isn't like that. The back side of the sleeve cap is longer and more gently sloped. The front is curvier, cupping at the armscye. In my biased but qualified opinion, I think the sleeve drafting portion alone justifies the cost of the book.

Downsides: Altho it is a plus that the text is in English, French and German, some of the translations are puzzling. For example, I know well what "collar" means. What I don't understand is how "collar" is used as a given point of measure within the text. I haven't actually done any of the drafts to know (at which point it would become apparent) but the definition of collar isn't something one should be puzzled about.

Readability: a bit more care would improve readability, say, indenting the beginning of paragraphs. In places the text seems dense (the proverbial wall of text) but that may not bother you. Another issue is font size within the drafts themselves. If you're an old fart like me, you'll need reading glasses.

Pluses: While a paperback book, the binding is stitched rather than perfect bound. This means you can weight it open and the binding won't break. I love the paper quality, it feels rich. Thick and dense enough that you don't get ghosted impressions from opposing pages. It also has a dust cover. This was not a cheap print job.

My fear is that this book hasn't sold well and will go out of print. Perhaps worse, the publisher won't consider it cost effective to print other titles similar to it. That would be a big shame. I would very much like to see this author and publisher to put out more books like this.

Note: I don't know anything about this author so I can't speak to where this comes from but it is obvious to me that the drafting style is German. That my friends is a very good thing. I don't know if the author was trained in Germany or learned from a German instructor or even whether the illustration style and organization originated with the German publisher but like I said, it's a good thing. Of all the pattern texts, the German books are the most expensive and by a lot. With the exchange rate and shipping, a German drafting book can set you back $300. Even I don't have one (beyond WW2 and earlier) and that's saying something.

Germans have zero style reputation but their pattern engineering skills are arguably the best in the world. Yes, better than French and Italian. It would be a pity if this German publisher were compelled to cease investing in books for the English speaking market because this book didn't sell.

Very Sound Guide to Pattern Making, however...

A quick note: The book is beautifully photographed and is much more streamlined than many other pattern making books.
Read directions carefully, and realize that where it says "cut" the instructions may be indicating "draw". The illustrations are helpful, making it easier to understand what the translations are indicating. Such a nice book. For the next edition a native English speaker familiar with pattern making [there are many of us!] ought to be a proof-reader. Unlike Armstrong or other pattern making books which attempt to be an encyclopedia of drafting techniques, "Basic Patternmaking in Fashion" provides a step-by-step explanation of pattern drafting for the garments illustrated and photographed in the text.

Great Book!

I love this book so much. It tells you the regions of the body needed to make accurate patterns, and it includes some basic projects to help you get a feel for what you are doing. As a beginner, I found that the book provided me with information that I would otherwise not know. This book is a great addition to my library of books. If looking for a book that clearly states ways of measuring someone (including pictures) and pattern making "short hand" and the things they stand for, then this is the book for you!

Favorite Scholarly Work on Bergman

After researching Bergman for a class I taught on him, and thus reading just about anything I could get my hands on, for me, Hubner's work on his films was the most thoughtful, thought provoking, and insightful. I especially loved her approach: She contextualized key Bergman works by placing these films in a historical-cinematic context and collating many readings and thoughts on the films; she acted as a kind of mediator to all of these disparate voices, subtly injecting her own voice into the mix. And...for a scholarly work, it was just a fun read!

One of the Best

One of the best books on Bergman, and almost certainly the best general introduction to the director's work (as opposed to, say, one focused on a specific perspective, like Feminism) to emerge in the last half-dozen years. Hubner has a lively, readable style, and she is a whip-smart master of contemporary theory. Although the ideal reader might be a graduate student or scholar, I imagine a smart non-academic could enjoy it, too. Only complaint: Why no low-cost paperback edition? I'd assign it as a textbook in my own film classes if it were more affordable.

Most helpful in expected and unexpected ways, this book is a must read for ALL business people.

I’ve long enjoyed the impact of a story to drive a position, but have never had a model to fully develop a quality story. This genuinely reads like someone that has put in the 10,000 hours plus of bringing the concept into the field, and subsequently perfected the model. The overall model itself makes story development seamless. And this was something that I and my business needed urgently.

This book has helped me both personally and professionally. But I want to speak to the area of greatest impact. As a small business owner, this book is a game changer for two critical problems we’ve faced.

First, we are a company with 40+ years of history. We’ve seen a lot of growth and change in our own industry and the industries we serve. And we struggle with telling the stories of our experiences. We have no repository of any, and when something in alignment comes up in a sales meeting, we have missed opportunities.

At my company, we have a great story to tell overall about who we are, what we do, and why. I've spent the past year struggling with getting something on paper. I didn’t have to read far to get there (page 30), and in ten minutes, we have an elevator story to tell anyone, from the POTUS to my 9-year old niece what we do. Running through our experiences over the years, we have a list of somewhere around 10 different scenarios we face when meeting with a prospect. And we have more than 10 great stories we can have ready at the helm.

Then the surprising, expected, and welcome outcome is solving problem #2. Our second problem is with employee engagement. Among the many wins from this book, this was the unexpected. My partners and I came to realize a year or so ago that one of our challenges of engagement is our need to articulate the magnitude that our employees have on solving problems for our clients. But it is not as simple as saying, “Hey Will, you solved a fifty-thousand-dollar problem today for Widget Co!” For the client, the impact is apparent, but employees in all companies often do not understand the impact of their efforts. But armed with a story, and all the tools imparted by Smith, we now have a powerful way to express our gratitude to our employees.

This book gets right to action. I enjoy that Smith executes the argument for the concept itself flawlessly, and then moves on. I find it frustrating when an author spends the bulk of their content reminding us of the validity of their original claim(s). The examples offered and the execution about each component drive buy-in without you having to revisit the original claim.

This is a book should be on the shelf of every business person that has something worth saying and something worth buying.

Already Using This To Build My Stories!

We know how critical stories are in connecting and engaging our customers. But if you’re like me, I struggle with developing and telling stories that are supportive of what I’m trying to accomplish. It’s so much more natural to go to the data, or the facts. But these don’t capture our customer’s imaginations.

Paul’s written a brilliant guide to help each of us leverage the power of story telling. First, he discusses the importance of aligning the story with where the customer is in their buying process/where we are in the selling process. The most appropriate stories in introducing ourselves to prospects are very different than those we use in presenting our solutions, closing, and even after we’ve gotten the order. After that foundation, he goes in to great detail in how to create powerful sales stories.

I tried his approach for a major presentation at for a group of top sales executives. The speech is coming up in a few weeks, but in preparing the speech and practicing it on a few people, incorporating stories has changed the impact and effectiveness of what I communicate. Paul’s guide will be the cornerstone to all my future speeches, and to most of my prospecting calls.

If you struggle with developing and leveraging high impact stories in your sales process, Paul’s book is a great guide to help you learn how to construct your own.

A Book for Salespeople and Leaders

When I first saw the title I wondered why I would need to read it. As soon as the author Paul Smith shared the story of the experiment selling items on eBay I was hooked. The author shared the results of a test selling items on eBay and how having a story in the description allowed them to sell at a higher price. After reading that I immediately began thinking about situations where using a story would help me be more convincing.

The beauty of the book is how it is also an instructional book to help you learn how to craft and use stories to convey your position. After reading the book I would highly recommend it not just for sales people but anyone who in a position where you need to communicate with others.

The author's grasp of his material and experience coaching CEOs are obvious in every segment. He's an expert at presenting a huge amount of information in easily understood chunks. Great suggestions

When I was listening to the beginning of this book on tape - my thoughts were - this is nothing new, I've heard all of this before. But that changed as I got further into it. I've read a lot about public speaking and I assist in teaching High Impact Presentation courses for the Dale Carnegie organization, so I've heard a lot of advice on giving presentations. This book on tape was definitely worth my time and I've recommended it to others.

A Must Listen

I respectfully disagree with the other reviewer. I felt the reader's voice was precise, professional, and memorable. No, it is not the tone you hear in everyday speech. It is a much more formal tone. I find myself remembering pieces of the audiobook long after hearing it by simply thinking of the man's voice. The book was filled with valuable material and I hope you'll give it a listen.
